East Ridge from Upper Boy Scout Lake  Sucess!

Came out to climb Mt. Russell an Mt. Carillon with the Loma Prieta Sierra Club Peak Climbing Section. Did Carillon as a warm up for Mt. Russell the next day. You can see for miles.

West ridge  Sucess!

9th day of the Sierra Challenge. An easy addition to a climb of Russell with great views of Russell's east ridge. Afterwards, I headed down the nice sandy slopes to Clyde Meadow for a quick descent.

West Ridge  Sucess!

Day 9 of the 2006 Sierra Challenge. Descended the east ridge of Russell with Evan to tag Carillon as my last peak of the day. Summited just before 2pm. Back at the Portal at 4:02pm for a burger & home-made fries.

From Russell/Carillon Pass  Sucess!

I couldn't resist. It only took 20 minutes from the Pass. This was the last peak that I bagged on my Trans-Sierra trip. I'm glad I didn't have to approach it from the east. The scree wouldn't have been fun coming up.

scramble  Sucess!

Did it after Russell mostly to get a good picture of that ridge. Nice little summit with a good view!

From George Creek  Sucess!

Had hoped to climb the East Ridge of Carl Heller, but found too much snow. Climbed Tunnabora, Russell, and Carillon instead with Rick Kent. Trip Report

After retreating from within 100 vertical feet of the Russell summit due to rough conditions and lack of time, I bagged Carillon as a consolation prize. Very short scramble from the Russell-Carillon saddle, but a very nice view from the top!

Great views of the area. Still snow above Boy Scout Lake. Intimidating Class 3/4 above Tulainyo Lake.

I have to share credit with Joe and Phil. We added Carillon our loop while on a quest to summit Mt. Russell via the East Ridge.

Route Climbed: South Slope/SE Ridge Date Climbed: 07/29/05  Sucess!

After the endless sand slog I followed the direct SE ridge to the summit blocks. This was slower, but added a little class 3-4 spice to another otherwise mundane hike.

Route Climbed: SE ridge Date Climbed: November 6, 2004  Sucess!

Followed the snow chute from UBSL up to the plateau then headed straight to the SE ridge for a fun 3rd class scramble to the top. Windy and clear and had great views all day. Met my first SPer, forjan, on the top and didn't know it till I checked the summit log.

The first stop on a Carillon-Tunnabora-Russell-Whitney-Muir dayhike out of Whitney Portal. A very short scramble from Russell-Carillon Col, but with fine views of Russell's East Ridge.

Route Climbed: From Russell-Carillon saddle Date Climbed: May 1987  Sucess!

Went up there with a buddy to do Russell. Got to the saddle, and it started to rain/snow. Cold and windy. Decided against Russell due to poor conditions and buddy's inexperience. Bagged Carillon as a consolation prize. Nice view of the fog that day... Wouldn't mind knowing what the view was on a clear day.

Route Climbed: South Slope Date Climbed: November 6, 2004  Sucess!

Went with mdostby (Mike). Got to the Whitney Portal around 9:45pm Friday. We slept only 3 hours or so. We started hiking at exactly 3:00am Saturday from the Whitney Portal trailhead. We went quite slow in the dark. I waited for Mike at Lower Boy Scout lake. It was now almost 7:00am. Then, Mike told me to go ahead as he was feeling nauseous (his son had a cold/flu recently, so Mike probably got it too). I waited for Mike at a spot a couple of hundred feet below Upper Boy Scout lake, but seeing he wasn't coming I went ahead on my own at 8:15am. The SE slope leading to the Carillon saddle had chute of snow in it. I thought I was going to posthole on this stuff but to my delight the conditions were hard snow so I deployed my crampons. The snow had the great consistency to crampon up on. This was 1400 feet of vertical gain. A good workout. At the time, 3 other climbers (who later I found out were camping at Upper Boy Scout lake) were a few hundred feet below me following my tracks up the slope. Near the top of the chute there was a small 8 foot section where the angle increased to nearly 40 degrees. I had to bury my axe in front of me and partially frontpoint. Then, at the Carillon saddle, I took a lunch break and headed for the summit via the South Slope. I reached Carillon's summit at 11:55am. I waited for one of the 3 other climbers to summit so that he could take a picture of me. He got there at 12:23pm and at 12:25pm I began my descent. The return was uneventful and I reached my car (parked at Whitney Portal) at 3:55pm. I changed into some dry clothes there and then drove down to Lone Pine. Once at the McDonald's in Lone Pine, I grabbed a chicken sandwich and vanilla milkshake and called Mike telling me him I got back down ok.
