Mount Deltaform
The Supercouloiur Route on Mount Deltaform, June 24, 2006, Banff National Park, on ascent of Pinnacle Mountain
This route has claimed its share of mounaineers including Kevin James and Mike Farrow in 2004 and Charlie Borgh (a Rainier Ranger) this past spring. Typical of our Grade IV routes in the Canadian Rockies.

....I could watch that face avalanche all day. In fact, I did. How long does the climbing season for the Supercouloir last? 20 minutes?

I used to think I would do it, but after the last incident (one died, one hung out for days at the bottom with broken legs), I decided just too much objectionable hazard and too many safer climbs to do. I would be more worried by the rock fall than the snow, the rock on Delta is all choss now that I have seen it up close....we bivyed at the top of the route on the ridge traverse...the ice fall to the left of the route is in all kinds of disarray...wicked face, I concur! You better climb the damn thing on a cold day. cheers

That looks like a choss funnel! I would think it would be better in winter or with more snow/ice in the couloir.

Rick, no doubt early season is the only time to give this a go. Winter sounds a bit gnarlly. Well, anytime sounds a bit wicked to me. Cheers and thanks!

""You cannot stay on the summit forever; you have to come down again. So why bother in the first place? Just this: What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what one saw higher up. When one can no longer see, one can at least still know.""   --Rene Daumal
