I used the Black cloud route to summit Elbert for the second time tagging South Elbert`s summit along the way. I never saw anyone else on that trail (other than the summit). This route is somewhat long but a nice alternative if you don`t like crowds. This was the second of fifteen peaks on my 2012 CO. trip.

Demanding but worthwhile hike. It was a worthy summit to commemorate a hiking colleague who died of cancer last year.

Tried and failed 2 years ago in October due to weather. Made it this time. Perfect weather, great mountain, loved it. Climbed with Dad.

First solo 14er. Summited at 8am and enjoyed some summit solitude for about an hour before heading back down. (Trails: North Ridge up, Black Cloud down)

Didn't know you could drive a wagon to the summer trailhead, so it was 11.2 miles roundtrip. Made the summit in about 4.5 hours, and got drenched on the way down despite wearing full rain gear. This was our anniversary and marks our 5th state highpoint together.

Climbed this with my brother-in-law during a camping trip to Turquoise Lake in Leadville. Great footing, elevation a bit tough on this sea level dwelling gal but acclimated with a Chief Mountain climb earlier in the week. A popular hike but well worth it!

Summer vacation with my Son. Still lots of snow, so we had some postholing. Didn't see a soul, except at the summit. Great views all around!

Awesome hike! Very steep though! Camped at the TH, hit the trail at 5:30am, reached the summit in 3 hours and 15 minutes and took 2 hours and 15 minutes back down.

Weather forecast was true to reports-clear all day. My wife and I could not have been more fortunate in that regard. Perfect day. Went up via Northeast ridge, spent about 30 min on summit with about 5 other 14ers, toasted with a can of coffee, then descended via East ridge, taking long way home; The Colorado trail back to original trailhead. Long, long loop, 10 hrs RT, but what a treat for our first. East ridge (South Mt Elbert Trail) would definitely be the easier route for newbies. We were there training for our Rainier summit trip in Sept. Did Bison peak the day before, and Lake Como two days later. BTW, Como mosquitos will carry you away. Just wanted to see what serious altitude is like. Totally acclimated after just 3 days in the area! Ready for Rainier!

Hiking up via the Southeast Ridge, we enjoyed a good, long hike. It was nearly 1 1/2 miles along the summit ridge, so we couldn't linger on the summit too long. We didn't want to be caught in a storm up there. The entire round trip, up & down, was 9 hours.

We took the old mine road just before the end of the 4x4 road to the south trailhead. From the mine at the end of the road we went straight up to the ridge to S. Elbert, then on to the summit. Took this route so we could see the summit instead of taking the standard south trail, which we took back down making a nice loop. Saw a couple ptarmigan and mulies on the way. Sunny but very windy, blew off the trail a couple times. My new highest point!

Used a 4wd to drive to upper parking spot, and then took 8 hours to clime up and down. The snow is limited at this Memorial day. But the wind was gusting 70mph, wich I had brought a ski-mask with me.
