Elbert & S. Elbert  Sucess!

Reached the summit via the SE Ridge route from the Black Cloud trailhead. Only ran into 10 other people. Spent 45 minutes on the summit, last 15 were alone with great views!

Northeast Ridge  Sucess!

This was my 7th Colorado 14er and 8th 14er overall. This was my first solo 14er. Just moved to Colorado so it was kind of a warm up for the rest of the climbing season. Got off the mountain at noon, just before a pretty good storm hit the mountain.

12,943 was just enough

Took the S Mt Elbert trail. At 12,700-ish, met a girl from Michigan who was walking down alone with chest pains. I mulled that over a bit en route up to 12,943' (according to my GPS) and then turned around to accompany her down, for which she said she was grateful. The mountain will still be there next time. =)

Clouds and Rain  Sucess!

Climbed to the summit in the clouds, and donned rain gear at the top - unfortunately we didn't get to enjoy the view from Colorado's highest.

Mount Elbert and South Elbert  Sucess!

Climbed Mount Elbert via South Mt. Elbert Trail (third summit since 2001). Returned back over South Elbert and Cosgriff (UN 13,588). Nice hike, great views!

Painful but well worth it!  Sucess!

Took the less travelled eastern approach from the 2wd parking lot. Great day with spectacular weather! It is an easy ascent in prime weather conditions but be sure your fitness level is up to par before attempting. My fitness level was disrespectful to elbert and he let me know...ouch, sore for many days to follow!

a great climb  Sucess!

A long climb by the main trail (east side), but not particularly difficult if the weather is good. As with any Colorado 14er, the view from the top is spectacular!

North Mount Elbert Trail  Sucess!

Just out of treeline we got blasted with high winds and a small snowstorm. Snow subsided but winds didn't. Summit was very windy and cold but the view was amazing.

Next time

We had car troubles driving up Pike's Peak, then rented a small car to get to the trailhead. We slept maybe 3 restless hours in the car, then started out for the trail. We ended up veering off to the left of the trail somehow, and consequently, didn't make it to the top. It was a beautiful area, however, and we will be back!

1st Adult 14er  Sucess!

Physically this is still the hardest day I've spent in the mountains. Coming straight from several years on the couch to 14,433 is hard work. This hike renewed my love of the mountains and has led to many summits in the two years since.

East Ridge  Sucess!

Climbed with Media Dude, several of his friends/co-workers and a few dogs. Long day on a beautiful route. The weather cooperated with plenty of sun, 'warm' temps and little wind. Skis and boards outnumbered the snowshoers today.

North Mt. Elbert Trail Date Climbed: 12 August 2004

My dad and I, along with my golden retreiver Cholla, left the trailhead at first light with fog in the valley. The day was sunny with some clouds. As the day went on the wind picked up and a coolness was felt on the summit. The trail is straightforward with only a few false summits to get your hopes up. The crowds were not bad in the early part of the day. As we desended after Noon people were still heading up the trail. It was a beautiful day on the top of the Rockies.

Standard Route  Sucess!

Felt like we were making pretty good time until some trail runner blew up and back down the mountain as we were about an hour off the summit - man was he fast!

Great views, tired knees  Sucess!

First 14er I made, nice hike up after staying at the campground and hiking 12 miles the day before. Hiked up with a few others and we all made the peak. Was a good easy hike up but with old tired knees the trip down was more of a challenge.

Firsts  Sucess!

My first climb/Highpoint/14'er/you name it. Went with my dad. He couldn't make it past the tree line but I made it all the way, dodging lightning and sleet. It may sound cliche' but it was a life changing experience.
