An absolutely perfect fall day! Endless views of Utah's canyon country along our route up Mt. Ellen and Ellen Peak. Also got to see a few bison on the slopes below us while hiking.

I drove through Capital Reef NP after spending the night in Beaver, UT and approached from the west side of the Henry Mtns. I got started hiking at 12:30 and visited Mt Ellen as well as Mt. Ellen Peak. It was very windy and sunny with a lot of storm clouds forming in the distant western skies. After hitting the two summits, I drove the Burr Trail to Boulder, UT where I missed a stop sign and subsequently met a fine deputy from the Garfield County Sheriff's Office. Finished the day with dinner at Escalante Outfitters in Escalante and then got a motel room for the night in Mt. Carmel Junction.

Pretty sure the wind blew out my ear drum. I don't even care, because this was so lovely. Twenty-first peak on the 21st! Weeeeee!

The wind was ferocious from the west. But we held firm and made it to the top. The aspens had started to change and the views were probably the best ever. What a fun peak!

Finally made it out to the elusive Henry range. Took a great nap in one of the wind shelters on the summit. Lots of nice campsites on the drive up. We stayed in Blind Troll wash and it was perfect.

Drove to the Bull Creek Pass in the dark from the Capital Reef side. Easy enough in 2WD as this is a low water year. Set up my hammock in the trees next to the road at Bull Creek Pass, and fell asleep watching the moon bathe Mt. Ellen in light, and listening to the bats. Started on the trail at 5:30 am, and the early morning rise was well worth it. Got some great photos of the sunrise. Also did Mt. Ellen Peak. Sat at the summit, all alone, and felt immense joy in the stillness of the surroundings, and the beauty of the desert landscape below me.

Didn't start until 11am, pretty tired from climbing two days straight in Monroe Canyon. Drove to Lonesome Beaver Campground which was totally empty. Woke up and then did both of the peaks in a couple of hours.
A really nice hike that would be fun to take someone who hasn't done too many mountains.
Ellen Peak was way worth the extra effort!

The slightly lower, northern neighbor is a very worthwhile addition.

Parked at Nasty Flat along the road from the west and hiked up the road to Bull Creek Pass, then onto the summit. Still quite a bit of snow up there. Misty views at the summit, cleared briefly to see some of the Canyonlands to the east and southeast.

It was very windy along the ridge the morning I hiked to the peak. Wonderful view and hiking with my favorite person made the impact of the wind tolerable. I called ahead to the Hanksville BLM office for road conditions. Road crews had cleared the washouts on the way up from Notom, so I drove up the West side and down the east (Bull Creek Pass Byway) which was in much better condition.

Pfeiffer75Do not go during monsoon season  Sucess!

We had planned this trip since January. Unfortunately, the monsoon did not cooperate with us. We climbed Mine Camp peak earlier in the day. We approached Bull Creek Pass from the west via the Notom/Bullfrog road. Once we got to the Henry Mountains Road, we saw a pickup truck stuck in a wash within 1 mile. We had to traverse about 4 more washed out areas. It took nearly 3 hours to reach McMillan Springs campground via the nasty road. The only good thing was we were the only ones at the campground. We did run into two DNWR officers who told us the road from Hanksville to Bull Creek Pass was much better and they were really surprised we made it up from the west (I almost got my Jeep Wrangler stuck in one of the washes). We spent the night at McMillan Springs and summited the next day. We also ascended Ellen Peak and the clouds started getting dark. We had to contour down below the ridge as some thunder was heard. When we finally got back to the car, we decided to descend Bull Creek Pass on the east side. The road was in much better shape than the west approach. This was an experience that I will never forget. If I ever go to the Henry's again, I will go in October.

#1 11-9-09 Parked 1.3 miles below Bull Creek Pass because of 8" of snow on the east approach road above Wickiup Pass. I was back at the car 2+40 later. Windy, 4" snow on many trail portions from Bull Creek Pass. Saw no bison (ground-based evidence aplenty they had been there!) but saw and heard nearly 2 dozen ravens circling the summit ridges. It's good to complete the list of Utah County Highpoints. #2 5-25-13 Mit wunderbarer Gesellschaft. Auf der selben Stelle wie oben geparkt. Grausamer Wind von dem Pass bis zur Spitze wo es viele andere Wanderer gegeben hat.

Camped just down the road. Stayed up watching all the deer and spent the morning watching more deer. I need a deer tag. Climbed with Kirt and our boys. Made it to the peak no problem.
