Challenging, but great fun! The exposure wasn't as great as I had anticipated, but maybe that was because I bypassed the trail where it was impossible to climb up with the ice and just bushwacked through the trees instead.

Climbed up the Flume Slide Trail then traversed the ridgeline over to Mt. Garfield. The mountain running in the White Mountains is spectacular. This was a fun little scramble and very weird to be scrambling with trees all around.

Hi, I was planning to do the Flume Slide. The slope of the slide portion was classified as a "class 3" What was your opinion of it?Thanks

Hiked Mt. Flume and Liberty via the loop around the two mountains. There was a ton of compacted snow already on the ground and this was tough even with crampons. But definitely worth it.

Date Climbed: Aug 19, 2011
Did a Pemi Loop over 2.5 days with a couple of friends. Going counter clockwise, camped at Guyot and Garfield tent sites. Saw an awesome lightning over a town to the north storm from Garfield; got hailed on in a lightning storm on the way out on the last day. Had a bottle of Bowmore with us.

Next time: the slide!

Solo, continued on over Liberty. "Not recommended in icy conditions" was all I needed. Late November, 2010, I got perfect conditions: snowy approach, but no need for snowshoes. Cold temps, fat ice on the slide part of the trail made it a low-angle ice climb. So fun and highly recommended. Spikes/crampons/ax. Don't fall.

Hiked up the slide trail on Flume, over Liberty, little Haystack, Lincoln, Lafeyette, Lincoln, little Haystack, then back to the top of Liberty and back to the parking lot from there. Long day, but gorgeous.

Both times I've hiked this the weather's been cloudy and wet, but still it's been well worth it. The Flume Slide is a ton of fun and I'm looking forward to doing it again this winter!

Took the flume slide trail up and managed to only run into 5 other groups on the way up. Slightly different on the summit and way down liberty springs where we passed at least 20-30 groups. The mountains are a mess right now.

3 point something miles meandering through the woods (and falling through the no-longer packed snow!) had us thinking we were going the wrong way...until we made it to the slide. It was steep and slushy going up, but we were rewarded with an amazing summit: infinite visibility, not a breath of wind, and a balmy 25F on top. Just perfect. Probably the best weather & views this winter. After a leisurely lunch on the summit we dragged ourselves over to Liberty and then back to the car.

After doing Lafayette, Lincoln, and Liberty, we figured, what the heck and hit Flume as well. The only question was, which way should we descend. We chose the Flume Slide and I wasn't surprised at how steep it was, but I was bummed to slip, fall and break my tailbone on the way down. : ( It was a painful hike out, as we had to hike to the road and then another 3 or so miles back to the campground. Still, it was a full day of hiking with great views, but Flume will be on my "bad" list for a while!
