Route Climbed: Flume Slide Date Climbed: February 2003  Sucess!

A fun climb up the slide. VERY icy. front point rigid crampons are a necessity if you are going to follow the trail and not bushwhack up through the woods on either side. The ice is hard water ice, so be prepared. The summit is very cool in the summer or the winter although it is impressive with the sweep of the west face covered in snow below you.

Route Climbed: up Flume Slide trail, then along ridge to Mt Liberty & down Liberty Spring Trail Date Climbed: 22 april 2004  Sucess!

Like a time-lapse movie of springtime, but running in reverse as I went up: dry at bottom, then mud & runoff, then soft "rotted" snow, then a nasty mix of ice and bare/wet rock. The flume slide itself was downright scary in places, wet as all hell except where it was covered in sheet ice... and I was climbing solo. Next time I'll bring a buddy, if only to hold the camera while I cling to the rock for dear life.

Up on the ridge the snow was pretty stable, late winter conditions, an easy walk and no problems on the ridge or the descent.

Route Climbed: Whitehouse trail to Flume Slide trail Date Climbed: July 2003  Sucess!

Strenous with steep climb up slippery slabs of rock requiring use of hands for some sections, fantastic views of all the Whites...

Route Climbed: Osseo Route Date Climbed: March 16, 2002  Sucess!

Scott, Steve, Pat and I cross country skied up the Osseo Route for a mile or so before burying our skies and putting on our hiking boots. This was an easy approach hike on a beautiful day. A couple of hikers passed us wearing lightweight clothes and boots and laughed at our heavy winter gear. About an hour later we found them half way up a steep icy section holding onto tree branches, not being able to go higher and afraid to go back down. We gave them a nod and continued on up to the summit where it was clouded in. No views but still a fun climb. No sign of our friends on the way down. Darryl

Route Climbed: Liberty Springs > Mt. Liberty > Mt. Flume > Flume Slide Date Climbed: September 20, 1997  Sucess!

This was my third trip to the Whites and my first solo hike. The fact that it was overcast meant that I only saw 1 person on my hike and he was staying that the Liberty Springs Tentsite. When I got to the top of Mount Liberty visibility was only about 10 feet and I could see the clouds drifting between my legs which was cool. When I got to the top of Mount Flume it started raining. At the Flume Slide Trail junction it started raining in earnest and I pulled out my AMC White Mountain Guide to check my options. It recommends not descending the Flume Slide Trail and further recommends not using this trail at all during the rain. I decided to do this anyway since I wanted to get off the ridge and this was shorter than backtracking. Not having waterproof boots, I broke out the plastic grocery bags I brought along as boot liners which lasted about 2 hours :-) Going down the Slide and standing in the clouds up top on Liberty turned out to be the best parts of the trip. I encountered no difficulties on the descent though it rained all the way out.
