Second of two  Sucess!

Did this one directly after Gibbes up the Old Mitchell Trail. There are the beginnings of a herd path/manway that are noticeable. It took about twenty minutes up from the end of the service road for Gibbes.

Easy Bushwhack from Old Mitchell  Sucess!

Hiked to height of land south of Steppes Gap on Old Mitchell Trail then made a bee-line for the top. Just about the easiest bushwhack I've done for a Sixer, maybe 5 minutes.

Fun bushwhack to the summit. We went on to climb Mitchell, Craig, and Big Tom the same day.

Had it to myself  Sucess!

From Old Mt Mitchell Trail, hit it on the way back from Mt Gibbes to Mt Mitchell. No one else on the trail. Bushwhacked my way to the top since any signs if an obvious trail were either obscured or non-existent. Best exit is to the south. Trying to whack down to the Old Mitchell trail directly west or north will give you a quick lesson on how tightly balsam firs can grow together. In a word, impassable. Bring it on SB6K!

Via The Old Mitchell Trail  Sucess!

from the paking lot at the Mitchell summit, then on to Mt. Gibbes and return via Commisary trail. An easy bushwhack and a surprise sign at the summit.

An accessible bushwhack  Sucess!

Hit this one with my 6 year old son on the way back to our car from Mt. Mitchell. It was his first real bushwhack and he loved it as it was neither long nor excessively tangled with blowdowns. A few nice views at the top.

Hikers Frequently Miss This One...  Sucess!

Easy to find...and just a short whack up the Summit. You'll find it marked with a sign and a geo marker.

Route Climbed: Old Mt. Mitchell Trail Date Climbed: 07-26-03  Sucess!

Myself and my climbing partner climbed this mountain while visiting the park (on our way to a Mt. MItchell summit). It was a very clear day and the weather was great!!!

I later made the summit again on 08-20-05 (after summiting Craig, Potato Hill, Balsam Cone, and Big Tom). The weather then was cloudy, therefore the view was not as good.

Route Climbed: Old Mitchell Trail > bushwhack to summit Date Climbed: June 4, 2005  Sucess!

Located in the Black Mountains of North Carolina, Mt. Hallback is a nice southern sixer that offers a little bit of everything. The trail begins with a nice gradual ascent that turns into a rock laden trail, which eventually gives way to an excellent beginner bushwhack. There are limited views from the dense summit.

We did the mountain on a foggy day. We passed no one on the trail & were had the summit to ourselves.
