| What a great peak! Hiked with Paul and it was another wonderful weekend in the Adirondacks. Did Haystack along with Basin and Saddleback. It was the first time I had good, clear views off an Adirondack Peak. Spectacular! 12/46 | ||

| Mt. Haystack is a beast that wants to devour you. Drain you. Waste you. This mountain sapped so much energy from me. Took a LONG time to summit and LONG time back. Makes me tired and exhausted now just thinking about it. | ||

| Climbed with my brother Bob in rain and wind. So windy at times we crawled. There were very limited views as we were in clouds and bad weather. Occasionally clouds would clear and you would see the clouds swirl around the "basin" between Basin and Haystack | ||

| Last peak for me in a very long day - the 1200ft rise to Marcy just looked too tiring after 13 hours of hiking. Haystack's open, windy summit was a good one to finish on; wish my camera had captured the weird green tinge of the rocks. | ||

| Tagged Haystack as part of a one-day solo Great Range traverse from the Garden. Perfect weather, perfect view of Marcy and the Great Range. One of the finest views in the East. | ||

| Great day for a winter ascent with Mike F. on his 46th! Deep snow, cloud cover, low temps, and high winds made for a great adventure. This was my second ascent of this peak - my first was in 1993 and Haystack was my first ascent of any high peak in the ADK. Beautiful mountain. | ||

| Snowy fall day in october. We climbed from opalescent brook up to skylight and over marcy to Haystack then stayed at slant rock leanto in the valley. There was a lot of ice and snow making the going somewhat treacherous in spots. A great peak though with precipitous drops on all sides. Highly recommended. | ||

| On a beautiful day, this mountain is an undistilled joy to climb. The Little Haystack/Haystack combination works well aestheically because whichever one you're on gives you a hawk's eye view of the other. Don't be daunted by the dropoff between the two; it only takes 20-25 minutes to negotiate; if you've come a far as Little Haystack you might as well go for the big one. Panther Gorge is positively vertiginous; it drops off clean out of sight; you may want to shout out in fear - I did! The shear, vertical cliffs between Panther Gorge and Phelps trail are incredible - they look like the walls of a giant quarry - be sure to check them out. Being on Haystack gives you the best view of Marcy and Skylight anywhere. But the best thing of all that Haystack gives you is several hundred feet of mountain above the treeline, a weird and otherworldly experience, which for me is the gold standard of hiking. The sole of my right hiking shoe became loose from the rest of the shoe during the approach up the Phelps Trail, making for a disconcerting flapping whenever I took a step. I considered tying it back together with a piece of rope, fearing I would get tripped up at some critical moment of rock scrambling, but ultimately just left it alone. I think the glue is drying out in my old boots. I'll just keep epoxying them back together. | ||

| In spite of the fact that it was getting late in the day, My friend and I continued our hike from Basin to Haystack because I told him I did not want to trek in from the Garden again just to get Haystack. So we plodded on, up a rocky trail, over little Haystack, and finally up the rest of Haystack, one of only a few ADK mountains that are truly above treeline. The views were outstanding but I ran out of film on Basin. We got back to the Garden over an hour after sunset. | ||
