Tough hike with the conditions! The snow on the trail was good in the morning, but it softened quickly. Hope's upper difficulties surprised me, given its standard class 2 rating, and we found ourselves on numerous sections of class 3 during our ascent. On the way down, we found easier sections and faced only one or two third-class moves. After returning to Hope Pass, we hiked up Quail Mtn. on dry ground and returned to the pass in one hour flat! The snow was in terrible condition along the way down, and we postholed most of the way from the pass to 11,000' on the trail.

We were tempted by potential glissades several times throughout the day, but our heads prevailed over our desire to relieve our knees. Our fears about the snow's condition were confirmed along the way back to the TH, as we spied a number of wet slab avalanches that had occurred while we were climbing. A trip report is available here.

This is a STEEP hike. I definitley recommend adding Quail Mountain onto the trip because of the views. For some reason Mount Hope really kicked my butt even though I wasn't too out of shape.

Mount Hope is a beatiful mountain. The view from hwy 82 at Twin Lakes is inspiring. I remember more about this hike than many of the more popular 14er I have climbed in the area. There are beautiful wildflowers off to the south of the summit. The view of Huron Peak is awesome as well.
