from Beaver Creek  Sucess!

I had tried this as an overnight in April 2019, but got caught in a whiteout 300 feet below the summit. This time, in July 2020, since it would be my first time above 13k since the Oct 2019, I figured I'd better do it as an overnight this time, too. Good thing! I summitted but didn't have enough juice to get to UN 13,433 before the rains came.

Climbed from Beaver Creek Parking garage! As a DAY hike!!!  Sucess!

From Beaver Creek we started at 4am and got to the end of the trail walking by sunrise. I was feeling pretty good and by the time Jackson finally came into view it was around 9am. Summited and enjoyed the views of Holy Cross to one side and Gold Dust to the other. Also enjoyed the foliage on the return trip.

Almost...

Didn't quite make it to the top. Left BC about 3:30am hoping to beat afternoon storms. Got to the Lakes at dusk and watched fog rolling off them. Made the straight shot up the west side of the lakes. The 700 ft steep climb put this flatlander on his ass. Was able to make it up to the 1st or 2nd ridge. I know I was somewhere between 12.5 and 13K because I could look across to Grouse which I have climbed before.

Sucking wind and weak with dark puffy clouds rolling in from Gold Dust and New York I made the tough decision to end it. Didn't want to risk injury continuing up the rocks. I had roughly 1 mile to go but the thought of making that 700 ft drop back to the lake in rain had me spooked. Turned out wise because it starting raining as I left the lakes.

Maybe some other time. I might choose to take the long route up Grouse Mtn trail if I try this again.

With UN 13,433  Sucess!

Solo hike starting at 2am from Beaver Creek parking garage. Followed good trail by headlamp (and moonlight) all the way to Upper Turquois Lake. Lots of mud and water. Climbed west from the lake up a short, steep gully to Jackson's long north ridge. Followed ridge to Jackson, UN 13433, and then reversed route. 21 miles, 6600 ft, 9 hrs 15 mins. Feeling strong!

Jackson and PT 13433  Sucess!

Day climb from Beaver Creek village with Steve Knapp. This was about a 21 mile round trip, which I think makes it my longest single day mileage for peaks. The views of the heart of Holy Cross Wilderness are spectacular and well worth the trek!

From Cross Creek  Sucess!

Climbed this one on a two day outing up Cross Creek. I carried the full pack up to about 11,300' in the basin below the east face of the peak to get some nice sunrise and sunset views. I was hurting for a few days after that. Great views from this one.

My 4th of July climb  Sucess!

Climbed solo as my brothers and usual climbing partners were not gung-ho for a 21 to 22-mile, overnight trek. It was their loss and my gain, however. This was one of the most scenic trips, with beautiful weather, and saw an abundance of wildlife. You really can't beat the views of the Gold Dust peaks and the rest of the northern Sawatch Range from Mount Jackson. The abrupt appearance of the Holy Cross Ridge really stunned me.
