unseasonably warm with little wind. Would have been perfect except for the low cloud cover that obstructed all views.

Franconia Ridge from north to south via the Skookumchuck and Garfield Ridge Trails to the summit of Mt. Lafayette (5,260’). We will then follow the Franconia Ridge Trail over Mt. Lincoln (5,089’) to Little Haystack Mtn. (4,750’) before taking the Falling Waters Trail down to Lafayette Place.

sredfernGreat component of the Pemi Loop  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jun 27, 2014

I bagged this peak as part of a 1.5 day Pemi Loop trip where I bagged 10 4K summits in all (plus a few that didn't count). The weather was incredible, but the ridge line was bone dry and had I been smart I would have refilled my water at Liberty Spring because I was desperate by the time I was coming off Garfield. I didn't enjoy Lincoln or Lafayette as much because of the intense crowds. I like my summit solitude and there was none of that because of the day-hiking city dwellers who climb them and have a picnic/party on the summit... I am glad they are getting out into nature I just don't want to share my summits with 100 strangers. My favorites of them all were West Bond and Bond Cliff where solitude abounded and the stark beauty of the ledges around the summits made for great places to quietly sit and appreciate what God has made for us to experience if we just step out of our comfort zone a bit.

Ran up the Falling Waters trail and down the Old Bridal path. Being from the Rockies, This is definitely the coolest mountain experience I've seen East of the rockies. The Falling Waters trail was absolutely incredible and the whole loop was fantastic...definitely a classic in my book and a not miss if you want a mountain experience in the NE.

This was peak #4 on our 5-day excursion. We passed 2 very large groups on our way to the summit. One group stated they had 57 people and the other had probably somewhere in the 20-30 range. There were a lot of folks up on the ridge for a Monday. We were glad to get away from the Franconia Ridge and to get into more isolated territory.

OnagerTough in the winter  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jan 17, 2014

My girlfriend and I set off on the Falling Waters trail around 6am, arriving at the summit of Little Haystack around 9:30am. From there we traversed the ridge to the summit of Mount Lincoln. From Lincoln we set off for the summit of Mount Lafayette around 12:15pm. We had zero visibility all day above treeline, making it tough to navigate certain sections and gauge how far we had to go. We finally have top of the line gear, except that my new new-matic BD sabretooth crampons kept popping off my Koflach arctis expe boots. After the 4th time they came off I switched to my hybrid crampons and life was swell. Took the Bridal Veil Falls trail 2.9 miles back to the trailhead, arriving around 3pm. Great day.

Did the Haystack-Lincoln-Lafayette loop. Found General Lafayette and thanked him for all he did for us in the 18th century. Didn't expect the trail to be so cared for on the ridge, was like hiking up the Empire State Building

Headed up on 3/23, lots of snow on the trails but it wasn't nearly as windy as the parking lot. Once we got past the Greenleaf Hut the wind picked up. Visibility dropped to about 15-20 feet at times nearing the summit, we turned around probably 50 yards shy as the visibility was rough.. could barely find the rock pyramids but made it back to the hut in about 30 minutes. Definitely one of the dicier situations I've been in, glad we were dressed appropriately minus goggles. Heading down was a blast, the trails were basically long glissade chutes, covered 50-100 yards at one point in a matter of seconds :)

Tried to do this a few years ago during torrential rain, and ended up destroying my boots. A lot easier to do in the snow. Pretty windy at the top.

Not successful. Almost got to the tree line of little haystack. Hard hard work to move through 3 feet++ of snow. Windy. Traces disappeared behind us. 7 hours return. Would have taken 20 hours to go around.

With all of the primary goals accomplished for my big NE USA trip, I had several days for garbage time (i.e. extra peakbagging and CoHPing, and sightseeing). Mount Lafayette had been previously recommended to me, with its large prominence being the carrot that led this rabbit to it. I did the trail traverse that crossed multiple named hills. After the nice morning hike, I drove south... first to Worcester (MA) for a hockey-related visit and then to Rhode Island for a couple of CoHPs (Bristol, Newport).

Hiked the classic Little Haystack, Lincoln, Lafayette. The first time was cloudy and rainy. Did it a little under a year later and was graced with a perfect day with almost no crowds.
