A fun and scenic hike. Camped at High Lake. Lost the trail just beyond the pass but pushed toward the summit and eventually met back up with it. Quite windy but fantastic views from the summit!

From Cirque Lake we went up New Army, lost the trail, and considerable elevation, but we figured it out and summited. All but two of our 14 person group made it. My 1st real mountain, as I was 14 at the time. Good times.

We camped at Horseshoe Meadows (elevation about 10,000 feet), woke up early, and headed up the trail to Cottonwood Lakes at 6:30 a.m. The six-mile hike to Cottonwood Lakes went pretty fast. From the lakes there's a great view of Langley. The tougher part of the hike was between Cottonwood Lakes and the peak. From the last lake, I hiked up a rough trail to Old Army Pass. My hiking partner took a more direct Class 3 route, and we met at the top of the pass.

The final approach to the peak was a long, tough scree slope. It took a while to get to peak, but I made it up there by around 12:30 p.m. The weather was great all day long, so we took our time coming down.

Dayhiked. First time there was too much snow. Second time, not a problem just keep climbing up that sand dune.

Interesting trip. I went with a client who’d "done it before" and ended up having to hold his hand. We also picked-up two rookies from Tennessee at the trailhead. It killed me to see nice third class chutes and not be able to climb them because of my partners limited skills. A very pedestrian weekend, but still fun. I went back the next day and climbed the direct chute in Army Pass for fun.

My first California 14er. Came in through Cottonwood lakes, bivied just above the highest lake and hit the peak in the morning. There was one person on the summit when I got there - and I scared the crap out of him...by accident of course. This is a great first 14er.

It was a beautiful day and I met some nice hikers near the top. My best friend Caleb had ankle problem and couldn't make it. My watch freezed at 10:30am so I thought it was the longest hour ever.

Would have been nice to summit but friend got sick and we couldnt wait another day. Coming from the flatlands requires a good day to aclimate... well for me.

20 degree night at trailhead, left at 5am warmed up as the sun came out. Made the summit before the clouds rolled over the top. Great trip up Army Pass no snow left.

Second 14er. The pass was still covered in snow at the top, so we scrambled up before then, camped in the pass, and bagged the peak the next day. A storm was coming in so we hurried down New Army Pass.

Dayhiked on a day that couldn't make up its mind what it wanted to do. Stars were out at 4:30 am when I woke up to heed nature's call. High cloudy overcat by daybreak. Finally it settled on cold and windy, with threatening clouds blowing in from the southwest. I thought it would rain, but all it did was drop a heavy mist (snow flakes up higher). All in all a great day! But boy, by the time I got back to the car I was sick of walking.

You consume a lot of energy hauling a 35-lb pack to a campsite. There is much to be said for a decent night's sleep in a Lone Pine motel, followed by an early drive to the trailhead and a fresh start!
