Black Bears do live in the Green Mountains in Vermont. They're fairly harmless, as long as one dosen't get between a mother and her next of kin or do something stupid like feeding them. After nearly five years of hiking in the Northeast I've never seen one, although I have seen signs of them around.

I wonder how many bears lived in the
Northeast during the 1700's ???

Arizona has black bears, but I've only seen
five during the past 15 years.
