Not the Most Fun in the ADK's

I am coming to the end of my 46er quest and I am finding the mountains I saved for the end are not the most enjoyable of climbs, Marshal included.

It was a long and very muddy day for limited rewards at the summit.

from the Upper Works  Sucess!

Four hours and twenty minutes to reach the summit. Shepherded a law professor from Ithaca back down, who had joined up with a pair of teachers from Rochester.

Cliff, Redfield, Marshall  Sucess!

Huge day trip with three tough peaks. The Dacks never cease to amaze me.

Marshall  Sucess!

Ascended via Indian Pass. Most of the trail had not been broken out. Lost the herd path on the way up and had to bushwhack through very thick woods to reach the top. Made all the more awkward with bulky snowshoes. Snow obstructed any views. Most of the descent was in the dark.

Beat the Weather  Sucess!

Iffy weather for the afternoon, but I got a decent start at 7:00 AM and made it to Mt Marshall summit and back in 8 hours. Not much on views from the summit, but a couple short spur trails with views south and west, and a pretty nice perspective of Iroquois to the east.

Mt Marshall  Sucess!

It took me about 4 or 5 different trips, but I finally got this peak. All the other trips were foiled by bad weather or car trouble, but this time I was successful. The snow was a lot less then most winters, but we at least had a broken trail. The way up was pretty straight forward, and unfortunately we had no views because of clouds and snow. But it's off my to do list.

No. 46 at last  Sucess!

Reached the summit at 10:25 AM on a beautiful morning. Not a difficult climb by Adirondack standards. It has been a fun journey to complete the ADK 46!

Glad this is behind me  Sucess!

Maybe it was the 4.5 mile hike in from the parking lot that put me in a grumpy mood. The snow fall draped on the pine trees helped pull me out of my darkness. Glad to have this one behind me. Camped at the lean to at the bottom. Enjoy folks.

Nice Sunny Day  Sucess!

Climbed this with coonsie; trail is the same mucky thing I remember, not significantly more degraded.

Mount Marshall  Sucess!

Summited Mount Marshall 4360' on a clear, sunny Saturday. We hiked in from the Loj the night before and stayed at the Avalanche Lean-To. The next morning we hit the trail past Avalanche Lake and around Lake Colden until we got the to Herbert Brook herd path. The trail was pretty gradual but had some steeper sections near the summit. Was overall a great trip!

Threes a charm  Sucess!

Tried to reach the top on Feb 1, 2009. Failed. Tried again solo on April 30, 2009. Finally made it with the help of Bill Dan Sandy and Beijan. Thanks to all.

Mt Marshall  Sucess!

First solo climb of the High Peaks, which was not so solo as a hiked to Lake Colden with two teachers. The route up Marshall was great, easy to read, and plenty of beautiful moss. The view was rewarding, but not awe inspiring like Iroquois. Left the lower works parking lot at 7:45an and returned at 4:05.

Hiked in from Upper Works to Flowed Lands, great spot! Then up Herbert Brook, nice waterfalls, to the summit with stellar views! Great spring day.

Cool  Sucess!

I like Marshall, did not expect much but the trail from Flowed Lands was very cool and there were some decent views from the summit.

nice summer day  Sucess!

I took the Herbert Brook herd path. This was the first time I started from the Upper Works on a hike. So it was nice to see things from a different perspective. I was tired so it wasn't an easy hike, but sometimes it's better that way I suppose.

offtrail winter attempt

Tried a off trail ascent, but could ran into troubles with making a path. Weather made it impossible to summit safely in the time remaining. Would like to try it again in summer conditions

Winter ascent  Sucess!

I also climbed this back in July, but this time the experience was grand!I spent much more time up on the summit area exploring and many magnificent veiws open up beyond hidden ledges and such.If you search you can actually get 360 degrees of summit veiws.Hiking along the Herbert Brook was like a sidewalk frozen smooth.I give this mountain a whole new taking in the wuinter...jimW
