| rained the whole time. one of maybe 2 people at the campground. only one on the trail. i learned never to wear jeans in the rain while mountaineering. small part of the trail looked like a lake that was over a foot deep. had to walk through plants and over a fallen tree. couldn't see 30 feet ahead of me on the summit. otherwise it was still a cool time. | |

| I hiked Mt. Mitchell along with Mt Craig, Big Tom, Balsams Cone, & Cattail Peak (from Black Mtn. Campground). It's a 17.5 mile loop, so leave at least 9.5 hours. Take: -Mt. Mitchell Trail to Mt. Mitchell peak -Deep Gap Trail to Cattail peak -Double back to Big Tom Gap -Right onto Buncombe Horse Trail -Left back down Mt. Mitchell Trail -$1 shower @ Black Mtn. Campground (you will stink by this point) Have fun and leave me a reply if you take this route! | |

| Pretty cloudy that morning but a great Highpoint and a neat place. The Blue Ridge pkwy is gorgeous. Mitchell and Clingman's Dome really are amazing for the East. | |

| My wife and I took the Deep Gap Trail out to Cattail and then came back and strolled to the summit unencumbered by our packs. The soggy day had cleared off to reveal nice summit vistas. | |

| Shortly after arriving at the peak, the fog and rain engulfed the entire area. No views... Undeterred by the weather, I continued on the Deep Gap Trail to Mount Craig and Big Tom, before the rain started hitting me sideways and the rocky terrain became dangerously slippery in places. This was the third of six State Highpoints visited during the weekend, the third State Highpoint of the day, and State Highpoint #35 for me overall. | |

| Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville closed, so had to make a longer drive than ideal. Oh well. Cloudy and hazy, but nice views regardless. | |

| We parked at the high lot and visited the summit of Mt. Mitchell briefly before turning around and enjoying the Black Mtn Crest via the Deep Gap trail, topping out on Mount Craig, Big Tom, Balsam Cone & Cattail Peak. We really, really lucked out on the weather: Sunny, blue sky, big puffy clouds, etc. Partner: Husband. | |

| Hiked up from the closed Black Mountain Campground. The hike started in the rain. The summit was cold, rainy, windy, and miserable. At least I had it all to myself. The weather had greatly improved by the time I made it back down to Black Mountain. | |

| It is no fun when you can visit a state highpoint and there is a souvenir shop to commemorate. A cloud covered the summit, so no views but the fall colors were very nice. | |

| WARNING! The summit is closed past the parking lot, due to he renovations for a new structure they're building at the top. It's closed to visitors until further notice. Of course, that did not persuade me. I drove 800 miles to get there, and I wasn't going to leave without that summit. | |

| Wonderful climb from Black Mountain campground. I was amazed at the many ecosystems I encountered on the way up. The temperature dropped from 85 at the parking lot to 54 at the top. Great hike. Brooke | |
