Evening climb to see the fireworks in the surrounding towns. Local fireworks are modest afairs but Concord, Manchester, Nashua, and Boston are visible on the horizon. All spectacular. All completely silent. Very very memorable.

First hike with my future wife. We both agree that we fell in love that day. We have now been married for 5 years and counting. Went back a few years later to hike with our 2 year old son.

Shorter route than Pumpelly, less crowded than the trails from the South.

Last time up I was greated by a 30 member church choir singing hymms. Aaahhhh back to nature.

Never have I ever climbed a mountain where I wanted to leave the mountain and head to a city to escape from all the people. Welcome to Mt. Manadanock the second most climbed mountain in the world. Many of these people must be fit though because this mountain is far from the easiest mountain to hike.

I almost turned around because it looked like it was going to be very foggy on top. Luckily the cloud broke a little after I began my summit climb. The White Dot Trail began out very easily but changed rapidly after hit a sign pointing that it was the most direct route up. The trail was rocky, steep and extremely worn down. It proved to be more difficult that I anticipated. It was hard to get any peace and quiet due to the seemingly tons of people on the trail. When I finally made it to the top I was greeted with a mixed view that was some covered by the clouds.

On a clear day though the views are great. Due to overcrowding, I’ll take the White Mountains any day over Mt. Manadanock. Still by most other standard this mountain was not a bad hike at all.

Given that I live in Boston (actuallly 10 miles NW) this is a great little mountain for training. It also cuts down on the commute time if you dont feel like drving to the Whites.

In my opinion the best time to climb this is in the Winter.

The Cascade trail to the Spellman and/or Pumpelly is the most challenging although the White Dot is the fatest route. When the snow fills some good lines appear. Nothing technical although some 30-50 degree pitches can be found and free climbed. (see pics)

Summer time brings out all the wannanbes...but some nice solo and bouldering can be had.

Okay. So I couldn't resist. I grew up in Keene, NH. and climbed to the top of Monadnock with my father when I was 5 years old. It was my first peak. We walked for a long way through the woods until we got close to the summit - then it was all rock. All I can remember is that it was a sunny day and we ate our lunch at the summit. Once on top it seemed like you could see forever. Although it's just over 3000 ft. it is the tallest peak for miles. It really does provide great views of the area. It was a wonderful day. Now I climb in the Pacific Northwest with my son.

I've hiked up this peak 45 times over the past few years - sometimes for fun, sometimes to train - This is definitely one of my favorite hikes - Especially, during the winter.

Also, if you ever get the chance, do this mountain as a night hike. It is a wonderful experience to look out over all of the small NH towns as they light up!

I've "climbed" Monadnock many times -- fall, winter, spring, summer. This is a great little peak.

Did this as a warm-up for the Whites and Katahdin ona trip out east. Nice rock ridge walk but tons of people on the summit. Got off trail on the way back and scrambled over to find the correct one. Weather cleared up as the day went on so we had decent views from the summit back.
