| I carry a 30m x 8mm rope which weighs about 3 pounds , 1”webbing for a swamibelt, few chocks, and a couple of slings for just such peaks. The whole set weighs about 6 pounds. I figure on being a bit tired at elevation and I might get off route. A slip could result in broken ankle, or worse. These little added gear sure make summiting a more enjoyable experience for us. | ||

| First attempted Muir in 2003. Got nervous. Attempted it again in 2004 and got halfway up the summit block but got nervous and turned around. This time, before making the trip, I researched the best way up and got it. | ||

| Climbed Muir while on the way down the Whitney Trail. Might have been 3rd class, but the exposure made it a bit sketchy without a rope on the west side. | ||

| After getting shafted on Polemonium the day before, we scored Whitney permits just as someone else forfeited them. Got 1 hour of sleep, left the car at 12:40am, summit at 7am, car at 11:20am. Been up Whitney a few times already so didn't bother. Fun and too short 3rd class. | ||

| Rewarding views with a quiet summit experience away from the busy trail. Would have stayed a while longer, but with Whitney calling and the clouds building, we were off the peak and on to greater heights. Completed the journey with a quick departure from Consultation Lake camp in a lovely afternoon hail storm. The trail was draining a couple inches of icy water for many miles. Left camp at 5PM to reach car at full darkness. Side note: Love those trail runner shoes and smart socks. Miles packing out with feet in water and no discomfort. | ||

| Had tried several times before alone. But running into some experienced climbers taught me the value of experience. Turned out to be a pretty easy scramble. | ||

| Michael Graupe | 2007 Sierra Challenge ![]() Date Climbed: Aug 12, 2007 | |
| Last day of the 2007 Sierra Challenge. The main objective of the day was to climb Mt. Newcomb. Starting at Whitney Portal I decided to climb McAdie on the way from Arc Pass. Then descended the class 2 chute to Crabtree Pass, climbed Mt. Newcomb via the class 3 east face. From there I returned to Crabtree Pass and gained the Sierra Crest climbing Discovery Pinnacle from the south. I intercepted the trail and hiked up Mt. Whitney. On the way back I also climbed Keeler Needle, Crooks Peak, Third Needle, Aguille Extra, Aguille du Paquoir and Mt. Muir. A long day in a very beautiful area. 14.5h car to car. | ||

| Solo Russell / Whitney / Muir in a day hike for the second time. Once on the trail, it's only a short scramble, definitely worth the extra 1/2 hr. Towards the bottom of the switchbacks I tripped and cracked a rib, which didn't feel that great. My total time was still better than before - 14 hrs or so. | ||
