No view  Sucess!

Unfortunately both the hut and the summit were in the clouds. Once below the clouds there were views up the valleys, and on the way down the clouds lifted from the summit. I got there an hour too early.

ed and my first in new zealand!  Sucess!

weather wasn't great in the high southern alps, so lemke and i tramped up to the mueller hut and tacked on a climb of ollivier. very popular circuit, we ended up hiking with hannah from scotland. fun day in mount cook national park! loved the snow on the mueller plateau and ollivier's slopes. great vantage point to watch avalanches rocket down sefton's slopes!

learned afterwards that ollivier was the first mountain sir edmund hilary climbed....sweet!

Eventually  Sucess!

Ended up at the false summit a couple of times (once on purpose, once by accident via an interesting side climb) before some Googling and GPS work indicated where the actual summit was and got over there via a 3rd route. Ended up on maybe the wrong side of the col and was relying on some negligible holds to avoid falling down a chute all the way back to the valley floor but overall it's very doable via the ridge axis or a cairned side route that goes across the flats from the hut for a bit, past the walled camp sites and then up. Even from the true summit it looks like the next point along is higher still but must be considered part of Kitchener.

New Years Day Sunrise  Sucess!

A nice scramble over fresh snow to the summit to watch the first rays of 2015 hit the highest peaks in New Zealand. Amazing!

False summit only

Not a cloud in the sky so views of Mt. Cook were awesome. And the soundtrack of avalanches on the face of Mt. Sefton just added more spice to it all. It had been snowing the previous 3-4 days, so there was a lot of fresh snow. We therefore decided to turn back at the false summit around 1.900 m.

From Mueller Hut  Sucess!

Nice scramble up from the Mueller Hut. Great views of Mount Cook, Mount Sefton, and the valleys. Then did sunrise on the false summit above the hut. Awesome!

Day trip  Sucess!

Quick trip up to Mueller Hut and then on to Ollivier. Worth mentioning (as others have) that the summit above the hut is a false summit; the true summit involves negotiating an irritating tower on the ridge -- descent to climber's right is somewhat cairned -- before gaining the well-cairned summit.

Sunrise on Sefton & Cook  Sucess!

Rain was our companion up to the Mueller hut but the met service's forecast proved true and I got great sunrise views the next morning. We even made it back to the van just before the rain started again.

Great views all around  Sucess!

There was a local summit not far from Mueller Hut. Further south on the ridge, the next local summit appeared to be higher, so I went there too. According to the hut warden at the time, that one is the real summit, but, not knowing, most people don't go that far.

The weather was fine, but I didn't look like it would stay that way. There were clouds rolling in from the west - massive clouds in fact.

a brilliant walk  Sucess!

we got absolutely beautiful weather this weekend, the hut warden said it was as good as any day he had seen in his 7 years there. this was the best trek on my trip to NZ. the peak is only 30 mins past mueller hut, there are a few false peaks but you will spot the massive rock cairn at the peak.

Route Climbed: From the Mueller Hut

Decided to bag this after a walk up to the Meuller Hut. The views of Sefton and Mt Cook were spectacular! Not a cloud in the sky. Fantastic views of the Hooker valley, Mt Cook and the occasional avalanche thundering off Sefton.

Superb views!!! Spent an hour on the summit, wasting my camera's batteries :-) The climb to Mueller hut and the quick scramble to Mt. Ollivier are highly worth the effort.

Headed for a stroll after dinner to the summit, from which I witnessed a glorious sunset. Headed out there again the next day to snap some pictures of the surrounding ranges as the sun rose - spectacular.

I had the hut to myself on account of miserable weather - I could hear avalanches roaring down off of Mt. Sefton about every fifteen seconds all night long. The clouds lifted above the summit for about ten minutes while I was on top - a spectacular adventure for such a little bump of a mountain!

couldn't see much because the weather closed in, but views in good weather from this area are great.
