Fun Climb--Lots of People  Sucess!

I was able to summit in a record time for me, despite the very crowded trail. It seems that Sunday has become a more popular hiking day in the last few years.

This trail always has a fun vibe, though, with a good mix of people out on the trail.

Wonderful hike. Slushy snow and mud half-way up. Clear on the final scramble. Packed snow on summit. Lovely sunset on the way down.

Consolation  Sucess!

I had to do something with myself after tearing my A2 pulley. I figured it be a good time to get back to my roots of pure exploration. Packed snow on the trail with somewhat sketchy melting slabs on rock higher up. Saw a small slab avalanche on the way down.

Steep!  Sucess!

Climbed with RB. More strenuous than one would expect. Nice scramble just below the summit and great summit consisting of a jumble of large boulders.

West Slabs  Sucess!

A fun but run out route. I think we pitched it out in 8-9 leads. definitely this would be a great spring training climb for bigger alpine objectives. the decent was maybe a bit harder than the climb. I was able to rappel with a single 60m rope and was glad to have brought it.

Fun scrambling  Sucess!

Climbed up in 1hr 45min from the standard trail. Scrambling was fun near the top and the views of the Cottonwood Ridge and the Salt Lake Valley are spectacular!

West Slabs  Sucess!

Took ropes, didn't use them. Bolts everywhere on slab. Also, couloir was easy with just approach shoes. Long summit ridge to true summit, then down the rugged trail and found new connector trail that traversed back to car at Bonneville trailhead in neighborhood. Saw a gopher snake. Fun times.

My first 9,000-foot peak  Sucess!

Hiking up Mount Olympus is one of the coolest things I've ever done. Reaching the summit was exhilarating; I've never felt a rush of emotions quite like I did up there.

It was a gorgeous day to hike, and even though I got a late start (11:00 am) I made good time both ways. It's a grueling hike, so steep on Blister Hill that it's a slog up and a knee-punishing trek back down. There wasn't much snow down low, but it was packed snow all the way to the summit scramble once I hit the switchbacks. The scramble was wet with snow melt, dry in places, and snowy in places.

I was worried about the summit scramble, as I've never done anything like that before. And partway up, I got scared; there were a couple of bits I found hairy. But I kept my head, assessed the situation, and decided that I wasn't in danger -- I was just psyching myself out. Not quite sure how I was going to get down what I was going up, but confident I'd figure it out, I kept going. And as it turned out, it was much easier going down.

Up top, I managed to put my foot through what appeared to be packed snow and in between two boulders, but I had my poles out and was able to keep it from going in too deep. A good lesson for next time!

This was my highest solo summit, first 9,000-foot peak, and first YDS Class 3 hike. The view from the top is the best view I've ever had of the Salt Lake valley, and after nine years living here, looking up at this mountain and assuming it wasn't something ordinary folks climbed, driving around the valley will never be the same -- I'll always remember standing on top of it.
