Pyramid, Aggasiz, and Price.

Started at Lyons Creek Trailhead. I ran the gentle uphill for the first 4.5 miles of the trail before hitting Sylvia Lake. At Sylvia Lake look straight across the far side of the lake for the only major notch in the ridge about 800 feet above you. Head around Sylvia Lake to the left and start heading straight up on rock slabs and talus. A faint trail appears when you are nearly at the top of the notch. When you reach the top of the notch the view opens up and Pyramid can be seen ahead and to the left. The trail seems to stop and start as you head directly towards the false summit below the peak. Once you reach the false summit the true peak comes into view directly ahead of you.

Head down the northeast (backside of Pyramid Peak) and stay on the north side of the ridge. This is slow going, heading across the talus on this sloping traverse staying below the ridge. Pass under the first major highpoint on the ridge and shoot for a notch before the second highpoint. It is doable class 3 scrambling to get up to this notch. From the notch the long traverse to Aggasiz is in full view. Stay on the west side (left if heading from Pyramid to Aggasiz) of the ridge. Although not difficult this is a slow traverse and will likely take some patience. When approaching the summit of Aggasiz head towards the notch to the left of the summit, then go left. Although one can pull themselves up to the summit block on the south side, the north side provides for a bit easier access in getting up to the awesome summit.

The traverse from Aggasiz to Price is simple and in front of you. After the Pyramid-Aggasiz traverse the ease of the Aggasiz-Price traverse is a welcomed sight! After heading down Mount Price you can shoot down into either of the two basins south of the summit. Both will lead you down to Lyons Lake which will become visible after descending further down in the basin. Stay to the west side of Lyons Lake where you will pick up a trail leading you down to the junction with the Lyons Creek trail. After another 4.5 miles down the Lyon’s Creek Trail you finally arrive at the Lyon’s Creek Trailhead. I ran the first 4.5 and last 4.5 miles of this 14 mile loop which took me 7 hours.

7:40 am start...and a very cool 31 degrees... We hiked from the Lyon's Trailhead to Mt Price/Agassiz Peak (from Highway 50....go 4 miles up Wright's Lake Road and you will see a turn off sign and parking area for Lyon's Trailhead). This hike starts off fairly easy for the first 5 miles or so at which point you merge trails at the sign for Sylvia's Lake or Lyon's Lake....you head left to Lyon's Lake maybe another 1 mile or so...again fairly easy. This is where the trail ends and you are left to climb up the slab rock, boulders and scree to the top....pretty difficult but probably only another mile to the top. We decided to then head over to Agassiz Peak....a very enticing and interesting looking peak which is fairly close...maybe another 1/2 mile....not very difficult at all. From here Pyramid Peak looms large to the southeast. We decided to go for it.....it is probably less than 2 miles away...but the going is very difficult....thru huge refrigerator sized boulders/scree and very slow going.....after about 1 mile and over an hour....we decided the north face ascent was doable but looking very difficult (especially for the descent down) ....however... given the miles we had already put in and not wanting to finish up the 6+ miles in the dark....we decided to save Pyramid Peak for another day and a different approach...probably from the south or east side of Pyramid (Rocky Creek approach). We hiked from where we stopped about 700 feet below Pyramid Peak (just above a small lake).... and headed down a pretty difficult boulder/scree descent to Sylvia Lake....from here it was about 6 miles back on a nice easy trail and to the car. A very tough day of hiking and one of the more difficult in the Tahoe Basin if you are trying to get all 3 peaks from this route. If we had been content to just do Mount Price and Agassiz the day would have only been moderately difficult. Be prepared if taking the route from Agassiz to Pyramid as it is unforgiving and challenging. Just remember....no trails from Sylvia Lake or Lyon's Lake to any of these peaks!! The views from Mt Price and Agassiz Peak are really quite spectacular...even if you can't see Lake Tahoe!

Mt Price turned out to be much more exciting than I imagined. Fantastic views, much better than from Pyramid. So far my favorite peak in the Desolation area.

Walked in from Rock Bound Pass Trail Head at Wright's Lake. There is almost a trail to the ridge top on the right of the headwall. We went up the left. It was fun class 3 with a little exposure then usual scree walk to the top. Out through Island Lake. Lovely fall wild flowers. No people until we dropped to Twin Lakes. With Lassie Hammock.

Traditional fall walk up Mt Price by Bruce and Lassie for 40th wedding anniversary. Easy walk from Lyon's lake trail parking lot via Lyon's Lake. Coyote, lots of grouse, huge red pompoms on buckwheat at about 9,000 feet. Perfect weather, no mosquitoes, no people.

Up Pyramid from Rocky Creek, then over to Agassiz and Price following the ridge. Snow was pretty hardpacked and very icy on the north side of Pyramid. Never needed snowshoes all day, just crampons. Extremely windy, below freezing, and great views.

The whole Crystal Range was where I learned to roam ridges. I climbed Price many times and walked the ridge to Pyramid a few, but mostly I just loved exploring the ridge and the little glaciers(not sure if they are still there) and the tiny meadows on the east side near Aloha.
