Mount Rainier at Night from Sunrise
Taken July 6, 2012 from the Sunrise Parking lot. A 60 second shutter speed was used to capture this photo, I used a bench as a tripod as well as using my camera case to angle it. This was taken a few minutes after getting out of the car from Colorado. I was pleased to see glaciers shining from the moon light. While I had a great trip, it felt good to be back home where the Cascades are wet but not on fire. On the left is Little Tahoma, in the middle is the Emmons Glacier (on Rainier) and a lodge can be seen on the right. The next three days after this photo was taken we climbed Rainier in good fashion and a very successful trip. What a great way to end the Grand Tour Part 2!

It's always fun to capture mountains with different moods and perspectives. Glad you liked this.

What were you doing in the parking lot?

I thought the Rangers closed the gates after
4:30 p.m. ... perhaps that's changed over
the years since the last time I visited.

Awesome view of the Mountain!

This photo was taken at 12:06 a.m. We were looking for a good place to sleep. During the winter seasons the mountain is almost always closed around the time you mentioned. But during the summer it's a different story. Why? Because winter conditions can bring unexpected snow which creates ice. Ice brings liability. There is more to it than that, but I think you have an idea of why. Indeed this was a great vantage point.

Great thinking! And because you were there
and grabbed a parking spot so early in the morning, no worries finding one later that day, when all the tourists arrive with their yapping dogs and fancy convertibles!
