Redfield/Cliff Loop  Sucess!

Came up from the Loj via Lake Arnold trail on a perfect day. Summited Mt Redfield and then Cliff Mt and returned via Avalanche Pass. Awesome loop hike, about 20 miles, 11 1/2 hours. I found the rock cairns for the trails, small and no trail markers. I started up Redfield thinking I was still heading to the trail split with cliff! I was probably 1/3 up Mt Redfield when I knew for sure I was actually heading up it, due to the terrain. Very scenic along the stream and a nice little spot at the summit looking over to Allen Mt.

Great day in the high peaks  Sucess!

#43/46. With RD Jim. We had a perfect weather day with clear skies, low humidity, and NO BUGS! Amazing for late May! Fun hike. 12.5 hours RT from Upper Works, which included Cliff as well.

Mount Redfield  Sucess!

Summited Mount Redfield during a 3 day backpacking trip. We came in late in the day from the Upper Works Trailhead and stayed Friday night at one of the Calamity Lean-Tos. In them morning we followed the trail from Lake Colden to Uphill Lean-to and climbed Redfield first, and Cliff second. Stayed the night again and came back the way we started on Sunday Morning. While officially trailess, I would find it difficult to get lost since the herd paths are well defined for both mountains.

Gray, Redfield and cliff from Lake Colden  Sucess!

Canadian thanksgiving weekend. Summer weather throughout. We left Montreal at 3 pm and started hiking at 7 pm in the dark from South Meadows. We camped at avalanche lake tent site. Next morning we dropped our stuff at Lake Colden and hiked Gray from Lake Tear. First unmaintained trail to summit. The day after, we hiked Redfield from Uphill lean-to and met a lady 46er and her son. Desccended to the fork with the trail to Cliff Mt. An a propos name for that mountain. On the 10th we hiked back to the car and stopped at the Mountaineers in Keene.

Longer than I thought.  Sucess!

Spent the night in the Feldspar Brook Lean-to. Wanted to get Cliff as well, but it took almost 90 minutes (breaking trail the whole way to get to the summit).

Nice climb  Sucess!

Very nice climb, the trail was fairly obvious, thanks to those generous hikers who maintain the herd paths to the "trailless" peaks. About 20 cm of snow at higher altitude, great view, no wind. Perfect! Same conditions applied to her neighbour, Cliff Mtn, though it was muddy at the top.

#45  Sucess!

Finally on a third attemp I was able to summit Redfield. The first failed attempt was a torn tendon, then a bushwhack from Allen turned into just making it out before nightfall. This last attemp was perfect. This summit was well worth all of the effort....JimW

Mount Redfield  Sucess!

Climbed with Cliff via the Uphill Brook Trail from Tahawus. Herd path is in decent shape; not nearly as bad as Cliff. Had a well-deserved snack on the summit. Had good views looking South as well.

From ADK with Cliff  Sucess!

Beautiful views, great weather. Bugs were not too bad. Uphill Brook was roaring with all the recent rain. Enjoyed lunch at the falls after summiting. Hit Cliff on the way out. Big loop through both Arnold and Avalanche Pass by way of ADK Loj.

From Upper Works  Sucess!

Hiked with Paul and had to break trail from just past Lake Colden, all the way to the summit of Redfield. Exhausting! And, we still had to get to Cliff! Long and tiring day, but we made it to both. This peak marked #24/46. : )

Route Climbed: Main Path from Uphill Lean-to Date Climbed: 8/3/05  Sucess!

In all, Redfield's a nice walk. Little blowdown, no false summits, water on the way. Go for Cliff first, then tackle this guy.
