Long drive down from Tri Cities for this fairly easy hike, but it was nice seeing Lake Tahoe and Virginia City. Lots of people on the trails, and tons of tourists in the region in general. Nice views, but smoke from a range fire had things hazed up a bit. This was my wife's highest summit to date.

Started at 7:30, summitted at 9:30; it was quite toasty at that point; gave out gatorade and water to less prepared hikers on the way down. Traversed over to Church Peak as a bonus.

This hike would make a good early season warm up because of the excellent views. I really have no clue why it's rated "strenuous" by the park service; it's basically flat until the trail heads up the SW gully and only then becomes moderate. It was windy and cold at the top. I hiked this with my wife Anna.

We expected a winter climb that would feel like spring, and got that, until we reached ~10K ft., when the temperature dropped like a brick. The route's false summits, mixed snow conditions, and wind-chill made the climb all the more exciting. Climbed with balajisv.

Enjoyed a nice, clear day and fun hike with a friend. A little icy in spots- poles helped. Great 360 views of both Tahoe and the Great Basin at the summit.

We caught this one on our way to do Mt. Shasta. Nice walk in the woods to stretch the legs during the 12 hour drive from Salt Lake City, UT to Mt. Shasta, CA. Windy on top--what's new. IVD

First summit of Mt. Rose. Approached from Church's pond. Found a use trail on the ridge behind the pond that went to Contact pass but had trouble following it because of patchy snow. Set out cross-country from Contact pass to the saddle between Church and Mt. Rose, then up the main trail to the summit. Returned via use trail on the east side of Mt. Rose then cutting across to Contact Pass. This turned out to be surprisingly steep - not sure I'd recommend it to others while there's still snow on the ground.

A local favorite and one of my many trips to the summit. Great weather this time along with a clear day makes the views impeccable. The New Mount Rose Trail is a medium but very enjoyable hike. With the right pacing and determination this mountain is a great way to experience the best of Reno-Tahoe.

We reached the summit in less than 2 hours to view a full moon. Have hiked to the summit a few times, including a run to the summit in August of 2012 in 1h 12 minutes. But this was the first evening hike.

Loved the last half of the hike, amazing upper ridge, spectacular views from the top over the desert haze. No wind, no clouds. Chipmunks on summit. Good warmup for White mtn peak hike a few days later.

What should have been an easy (4 hour - 10 mile roundtrip) hike turned out to be a 6 3/4 hour hike due to the bad back/knee of my friend who I had brought along to do this hike. The first 2 1/2 miles went well then the steeper climbing started to take its toll on his weak spots. In the end he made it and marveled at the amazing views and the stark contrast of the western slope with all the trees and lakes, and the eastern slope with the brown Nevada high desert below! No worries, after great pizza at JJ's in Reno, he was golfing the next day in Carson without much pain at all.

A true walk up. Hiking through the waterfalls and wildflowers was far more interesting than the dreary summit ridge. No need to repeat this hike.

Approached on the Jones Creek Trail. Began post holing. Snowshoes necessary from 1/4 mile east of Church's Pond. Crampons necessary the last several hundred feet. Had the top to meself, no signs in the snow of humans there for weeks or months. Lenticular clouds in the sky to the southeast. Glorious view!
