StephMitchamThe day that changed everything..  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 7, 2011

It was a beautiful day, I was excited to get up to the mountain. I had climbed St. Helens the year before, but was unable to summit due to weather conditions. So this year I hoped that the weather would cooperate, and it did, much to my delight. As we climbed the mountain to the point where we were able to stand amidst the clouds, my life began to change. Somewhere in that climb I found myself face to face with myself. It was just me and my breath and each step. My mind felt the clearest it ever has. There is something about climbing that brings you closer to who you are than anything else. I fell in love that day, absolute true love. I will be climbing all the remaining years of my life!

Despite severe avalanche dangers we pressed on to the most rewarding summit of our 3 mountain trip. The magnificent crater was steaming and gurgling in dramatic fashion. The shear size of the blast crater is just remarkable. We then glissaded down the steep slopes and now are only left with pleasant memories of a fantastic volcanoe...Jim W

Worm Flows Route- great weather, almost hot. Everyone stopped at the crater rim, but didn't make the true summit this day. I pushed on over some scarey cornices and found the true high point.

Great hike. Clouds around summit made it impossible to get close to edge but got within 200 feet.

Date Climbed: Mar 20, 2010

Went up Worm Flows with maybe about a hundred other people on a gorgeous day. It was pretty windy near the top, so the traverse along the rim to the true summit (no other takers while I was there) was a bit of work.

We snowshoed up from Marble Mt. Snow Park, and took approximately 6 hours to summit. Above 6500 feet or so, we got above the clouds and had amazing views of Hood, Adams, and Rainier. A bit icy near the top, but a great day out nevertheless.

A great trip with a great group of guys with bluebird skies. The snowboard line down was nice too.

Date Climbed: Jan 30, 2011
Started at Marble Mount snow park. Rain up to 4000', then partially clearing skies giving us a false promise of hope. Hard snow and unbreakable crust lower on the mountain with large sections of water ice covered in wind-packed powder higher up. Crampons made the going a bit easier but weren't really necessary. Whiteout conditions and a late start forced us to turn around 300-400 feet below the summit. Snowboard descent was very challenging due to the whiteout, but once we dropped below the clouds and figured out our route it became quite enjoyable.

The snow below timberline was choppy, wet and heavy and I found myself struggling to remain upright during the last mile or two through the trees.

There were some decent glissades on the way down, plus it was neat seeing all the snow cornices up there.

My brother made a climb the year before St Helens blew it top. Glad we did not wait another year!

Back in the days before you needed a permit. Couldn't see a thing up there.

Having climbed this mountain dozens of times in all seasons, I'd have to say that climbing in a flowery dress and wide-brimmed hat on Mother's Day is special by any measure.

We made it up the 8200' crest, but didn't traverse over to the high point. Maybe I'll go back and do it again and we can get an mmHHm! earlier start.

LeviThree hours of sleep, 11 hours walking  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Nov 3, 2010

Climbed with a buddy of mine and my dog. We got a 5 am start and ended up getting a little lost in the dark. Snow starts about a mile into the trail and caused us to lose it. We waited for sunrise to find we were on a ridge across from Monitor Ridge. After a lot of bushwhacking we got on the right trail. It was very windy the entire day. We would sink to our waists in the snow by the rocks and my dog gave up about half way up. I had to carry him on my shoulders awhile but then he got his second wind. It was a tough one to make but it was worth it. The views were incredible without a cloud in the sky.

sastarWarm Day  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 25, 2010
Second time climbing St. Helens in two years. Started out from Climbers Bivouac around 0845. Warm sunny day top to bottom. Very hazy at lower elevations and thunderheads could be seen off to the south around Mt. Jefferson. Still a lot of snow up at the top, especially inside the crater rim preventing a direct view down into the crater.
