The first mountain of our brutal 8000m Challenge. A lovely sunrise hike, and a fun start to an amazing day.

Beautiful climb with only a couple of hikers on the way up. I got to the top just as the the winner in the 35th annual Mt. Baldy Run to the Top crossed the finish line. I was soon joined by more than 500 runners running up the trail from the ski lift. I descended against the tide tide of runners and was back at the car 4.5 hours after I started. This was my 100th County High Point.

I remember the bent over metal support poles along the steep and narrow backbone section. I have skied Baldy in the winter when I lived in Los Angeles.

Wowsers. What a beast. Did this 6000', 6 mile climb as a training hike for Rainier - and those switchbacks in the mountain desert the first 3 miles or so got me. I was totally humbled when I had to stop periodically to catch my breath. Reached the summit in 3 hours, back down in 2.5.

Have summited at least fifty different times. A great way to spend a Saturday morning. For something you'll never forget, try an ascent by full moon and chill on the summit til sunrise.

A nice hike with good easterly views. Lots of people on the summit. I highly recommend doing this in Spring or fall. The Summer is a bit too warm.

The Backbone Trail was intimidating in some places for an inexperienced hiker...steep sides that fall away for what looks like miles...but it was a thrill to get to the top. I forgot about getting back down! Fun trip that I'd love to do again.

I enjoyed the area today. I took the road up to the ski area, and visited Thunder, Harwood and finally Baldy. I was very happy to see a herd of Bighorn Sheep up there and snapped some fine photos. Lovely area.

This is the only hike in which I feel I cheated, we parked at the lot and paid to take the ski lift up, which feels weird without a snowboard under my feet, yet, from the hut, the hike was fun and the wind-n-snow added to the excitement.

My first night time summit on a gorgeous moonlit night. I summitted at 2am, slept till ~6am and awoke to a huge swarm of moths.

Great day for a hike. 6000' elevation gain on this steep 6-mile trip. Hiked with my hiking buddy Dan. Took our time. Headed up the trail at 6am. On top at 10:30am. Quite a few people on top (20-30?). Went over to west peak of Baldy before heading back down. The hike down is not too much fun due to its steepness and loose scree. First time up this trail, although second time on top of Baldy. Great hike. Met a man on the way up who was hiking this trail for the 123rd time!

Did a loop hike -- up the Ski Hut Trail, down the Devil's Backbone Trail. The snowfield below the summit is only about 15 - 20 feet wide at this point. There were a few dozen people at the summit when I was up there. Visibility wasn't great at the top, but at least heat wasn't a factor. A great way to spend a Saturday morning!

csundraRoute Climbed: Baldy Village Trail (Church Route) Date Climbed: September, 1995  Sucess!

Probably my first peak. I hiked it in college, almost 10! years ago. I went from Baldy Village with a bunch of very fit guys who kicked my butt. Despite being last to the top, and despite it being a smoggy day so you couldn't see anything, reaching the top felt great. It was an overnight trip, and we slept in rocky wind shelters at the top. I had just gone on my first backpacking trip a few months before, little did I know climbing was next. Ah, memories!

notinkansasRoute Climbed: Ski Hut trail as far as hut, then up creek bed to Harwood Date Climbed: May 2, 2004  Sucess!

Thought I’d try a different route this time to include Harwood. Most of the San Antonio creek bed was scree, which made it a little tough but it is a direct line to Mt. Harwood. Then down Harwood, and up Mt. Baldy.

ReiksgibRoute Climbed: San Antonio Ski Hut Trail Date Climbed: April 24, 2004  Sucess!

Climbed this route on a beautiful clear day in SoCal. You could see Catalina and San Clemente Islands offshore. Snow was not significant as there were only a few patches on the switchbacks up above the bowl, and one small easily navigated snowfield just before the summit. Met Bud Halley at the Sierra Club hut; he is the yodeling guy. If you have been on this mountain enough, you have surely heard him.

Training for a Colorado 14er and in the meantime I found a beautiful and worthy peak in it's own right. I did a big loop and ended up running down through quicksand like scree for a couple miles near the ski lift. I'm just glad I didn't go up that way.
