First 10K Peak  Sucess!

Made this hike from the Manker Flats trailhead. Pretty easy trail. It was hotter than I expected, but I had plenty of water. The trail was pretty busy. This is the hike which has set me to find more high peaks to conquer, but I like the solitude of the less travelled routes.

Slow & Steady  Sucess!

55 & First time up this peak? Ya got to be kidding me. But yes, sad fact is it took me this long to get around to bagging this summit. Great views! My worn out boots made the snowy bits challenging. Glad I had a walking stick.

Manker to Baldy via Hut  Sucess!

Sunny and windy. Trail was dry until the hut. Hut to 8800' ridge had 6-24" of snow. Snow picked up, iced over in places, at 9200' and continued to the summit. Most of the people I passed had crampons but one couple had made it without even microspikes.

Fun  Sucess!

Took the ski lift up part way and hiked the summit via Devil's backbone. This was the first time I've done a big hike without any sort of attempt at altitude acclimation and I felt it!

fun hike!  Sucess!

Just guessing on the date. Really fun hike that was actually tougher than I was expecting. Ran into San Francisco Giants pitcher Brian Wilson on the summit. How cool is that? Be prepared for a great workout!

From Mt. Baldy Village via Bear Canyon  Sucess!

Needing to warm up for C2C the following week, took the Bear Canyon trail for a speed ascent. Tagged West Baldy for extra credit and extra gain on the way back.

from the ski lift parking lot

Went up the ski hut trail which was warmer than a month ago. Down the backbone with a tiny bit of wind and some beers at the notch before heading back to the car. Carried 45lbs to start training for Rainier next summer

Mt. Baldy  Sucess!

Hiked from the service road near the ski hut to the Notch to Devils backbone to summit. Lots of people out that day, really fun and took us 6 hours total. Rang the bell on the way back and had a delich burger at Baldy Cafe down in town. Loved it

A little dicey but you gotta try this!  Sucess!

My last summit of Baldy was in April of 2011. We went up Manker Flat and down the devils backbone/the Notch. Total time was about 6 hours, largely because I got some nasty vertigo coming down a snowfield on Harwood towards the backbone. Kickstepping was the name of the game but obviously everything worked out just fine...just be very very careful on the backbone!

The Village trail is also a good one, but adds 2000' of elevation gain with almost the same distance. Give that one a shot someday, it has amazing views and no one on it usually.

From Manker Flats via Ski Hut  Sucess!

Surprisingly low amount of snow for the time of the year. Trail was regular except for some icy patches above the hut while gaining the top of the Bowl.
