| Baldy was my first big mountain hike when I was 8 years old. It started a long term addiction to mountain hiking. I will always remember that first summit with my father. I was tired, but I enjoyed every bit of it. I returned a least 10 more times to this memorable peak. My parents still live in Upland below the peak. I remeber using an ice axe for the first time on Baldy many years later. One time on the peak with my family, a army huey chopper landed on the peak. The hike from the ski cabin was a favorite. The north backbone trail from the north was a memorable hike. Still in my mind, one of the important peaks in the west. My Baldy memories will always have a special place. I have lived in Wyoming for 15 years, exploring the Northern Rockies as much as I can, but if not for Mt Baldy, I might have never had the passion I enjoy now. | |

| Great hike. Only a couple of tracks in the snow from the day before. My golden and I topped out in 50 mph winds and foot deep snow - nice and sunny though. Went over to West Baldy and back down. It was really fun. | |

| Hiked up past the ski hut. Saw a sheep along the trail to the summit. Steep in some places but not too bad, especially after Mount Whitney. | |

| Probably my 20th time or so using either the Ski Hut or Devil's Backbone trail. Need to try Bear Canyon and Register Ridge someday just to mix it up. I went solo this day and wanted to push myself up the Ski Hut trail. Wanted to break 2 hours but ended up doing it in 2:09. Next time... | |

| Started from the road onto the Ski Hut Trail around 6:30am on a Thursday. Nice and shady for the first two hours, and probably ran into less than 10 people the whole way. The top was completely empty for the half hour we stayed at the summit. Enough light breeze to keep the sun bearable, and doused our heads in the waterfall on the way back. Same trail down for a total of about 6 hours. | ||

| The hike itself was great. Beautifull weather, good temps., and a well-maintained trail that didn't just give up the summit. At first I was a little upset that there were so many people out there. Sure I could have just gotten up earlier and I might have had the trail more to myself. However, as I made my way up, over, and down the other side, I observed people of all shapes, sizes, ages, etc. along the trails, on the peak, making an effort not just to get out and enjoy the outdoors (like me) but to take on a physical challenge that many (I imagine) were not sure they could accomplish when they started out. Congrat's to all of you who hiked (whether you summited or not) Baldy on July 27th, 2008!!! | |
