Mono Pass - Class 2  Sucess!

Wonderful day trip with my 5 month-pregnant climbing partner. Super rewarding summit without too much stress. I was unsure of the actual summit, and had an enjoyable ridge traverse to the northern summit, each summit (northern and southern) looking just a tad higher than the other! Couldn't find a register, but that ridge traverse was sooooo worth the search. The fall colors in the lakes valley made the area look like a golf course!

Warm-up  Sucess!

After a 7 hour drive from Northern Cal, started hiking at 4PM. Went up via Mono Pass and down the East Face. I would never suggest the East Face as an ascent (maybe with snow) but it had some of the best scree for plunge stepping descent yet encountered.

From Mono Pass  Sucess!

Went for a quick day hike op Mt. Starr with Eric (codda12) and Blair (blair). We arrived at a campground in the Bishop area around 1:30am and were really considering making it a night hike under the full moon. After going back and forth with the idea a couple of times, we decided to get a few hours of sleep instead; we were pretty tired and had never been in that area before. Woke up around 6am and after some breakfast, we were headed up the trail. Fun scrambling on the ridge to the summit. Quite confusing to know which one is the actual summit. I abandoned my register search when some black clouds turned threatening. Luckily no storms developed and we were soon enjoying some pizza at the pizza factory in Bishop. Fun day!!

Climbed with my daughter Tessa. Her first Sierra peak at 3 years old. Of course she got a ride in the pack, but she laughed and sang the entire way up and down.

Did this as an afternoon hike after our usual late start. Not the most exciting, but worth doing at least once. The views from the summit are quite nice.

Mono Pass still with snow. No register on Starr even though several have been left since 2004. Took a friend on this for his second summit hike ever.

I don't know where the register might be. Went from one end of the ridge and back and still couldn't find it.

Route Climbed: East Sand Slopes (ascent) / West Sand Slopes (descent) Date Climbed: Sep 3, 2005  Sucess!

Glenn, his brother Curt, and I climbed this as a warmup for the TBolt-North Pal traverse the next day. We'd been told by a mutual friend--I'll won't name him here in order to spare Bob B. some embarrassment--that the East "Face" offered some nice scrambling. We found instead a hell of a lot of sand, and somewhere near the top about 20 feet of enjoyable contrived third class. At least the equally sandy slopes down to Mono Pass were pleasant to descend. Nice views from the summit--I thought they were probably better than those from Mills or Abbot.

We continued on to Ruby Ridge (some exciting cl 4-5 scrambling to gain that), but bailed on continuing on to Ruby Peak because of general apathy.

Quick warmup hike from Mosquito Flats trying to get acclimated for my hike the next day to Hilgard and BCS. Fun ridgeline scramble to the highpoint.

Route Climbed: Ruby Lake and Mono Pass Date Climbed: July 6 2005

Reached the pass after about 1/4 mile hike on snow. There was still significant amounts of snow around the pass but it is doable if you are careful! We didn't climb the summits as we didn't have gear with us and my friends were concerned about the late time of day. Ruby Lake still had much snowpack and was beautiful.
