Soloed up the SW ridge- to avoid the scree. No snow on the route but hailed and snowed a little on the way down- super views remained even so. From trailhead to summit absolutely one of the most scenic hikes I've done- I'd definitely go back.

fantastic views due to its location east of the crest... cool plaques remain on summit from ascents in the 1930s... climbed via horton lakes

No views from summit due to whiteout conditions. I traversed to far south and had to descend a sketchy south chute down to below Horton Lake. Lucky I didn't cliff out.

Went up the typical route, 4:20 to the top from the gate. Been awhile since I got up a Sierra peak, it felt great. We stuck to the better talus ribs straight up from the mine portal to the ridge, then took the ridge to the top. The sandy, loose stuff is for the descent only!

Climbed with Dave Gonzalez with a camp at Horton Lake. I was too slow and the deteriorating weather finally made me turn around at about 300 ft below the summit. Dave topped out though.

An unenjoyable scramble up mostly loose scree from the mine. Great views partially compensated for the slog.

mlarkin2002Dayhike from Horton TH  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 3, 2005
Climbed a year ago. The only thing I have written in my notes is "really loose sucky scree". The views were nice, but I'm not sure I'm in a hurry to go back.

Robin and I actually got an early start for this one - mainly to ensure we got back in time for chinese food. Nice long dayhike. The views from the top were slightly sullied by a thick haze, but were impressive nonetheless.

Nice walk filled with some historical interest. The climb from the mine is really crappy scree and loose talus.

Challenging day. Used crampon for a 500 vertical foot section on the way up, and glissaded about 1200 vertical feet on the way down. Talus tip-toeing and class 3 sections caused me to continuously repeat to my self, "patience"! Slow and steady made this climb work for me. Climbed solo, saw one other party. On the way down found I had moved to far South was dropping into the South face with it's exposed gullies - had to climb back up and north to regain the S.W. ridge.
