Made this attempt seriously out of shape and paid for it. Summiting this mountain was anti-climatic since out goal was Mt. Wheeler for this trip. Nice to have it anyway. Great time with our crew.

Tagged Mount Walter on the way down after hiking up to the summit of Wheeler Peak via the Williams Lake trail. Cool & windy day along the summit ridge (3.5 hrs car-to-car).

RedwicWeather Issues At The Summit  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 7, 2007

Starting in the early morning, there were beautiful weather conditions... *until* I climbed halfway up the saddle-slope between Wheeler Peak & Mount Walter. Then, suddenly, a solid cloud blanket covered over both peaks. The wind picked up, and it quickly felt like the temperature dropped to below freezing. When I reached Wheeler Peak's summit, the cloud/fog was so thick that I couldn't see 2-3 feet in front of me, so I jogged over to Mount Walter's summit to hopefully find more suitable conditions... only to find much of the same thick cloud cover there. It was too bad, as I bet that the views from the summits would have been spectacular. Thank goodness for my GPS & general pathfinding skills. The Williams Lake Trail is very nice!!!

Made my way up to the summit of Wheeler Peak via the Williams Lake trail, spent some time there and then worked my way over to Mt. Walter. Very beautiful scenery all around.

I don't really think this counts as a separate peak, but who am I to judge. I took the 10 extra steps to tag it on my way to Wheeler so I guess it has some meaning

This was a very long drive for us to get to hike to New Mexico's highest point and second highest, but it turned out to be well worth it. Fun steep route, great exercise and great vistas, not to mention all the wildlife we saw and many interesting wildflowers back down in the forest.
We made it down just before a massive thunderstorm developed.
My dog was a trooper. Our slideshow from this adventure is here, enjoy:

Camped in the basin below the night before. Basically a sub-peak of Wheeler, but very nice.

We climbed Walter on the way to Wheeler Peak. There were some extremely psycadellic snow formations on the way up caused by Wind & melt. Early may was a good to to visit Walter because of the lack of people on the mountain during this time of year.
