Route Climbed: Mountaineers Route Date Climbed: April 27, 2003  Sucess!

We took the steep gully on the way up and returned via the traverse. There was a bone chilling wind at the top that significantly shortened our summit siesta.

Had an awesome trip. Spent two nights at Trail Camp. We had no wind at night. It did hail, sleet , and rain on us both days around 3 pm.

Route Climbed: Whitney Trail Date Climbed: September 5, 2003  Sucess!

First time up the long but spectacular main trail. Thankfully the we left at 4:15AM on a Friday and the crowds had probably thinned out a bit since labor day weekend so it was a few notches closer to a "wilderness experience". We made good time, hitting the top in just a hair under 5 hours including breaks and water refills at Trail Camp. Incredible view from the top in every direction, thankfully, as by 11:30AM the previous day storms were already firing up on the Sierra Crest. This is what inspired us to shoot for the top early and fast. Total trip time just under 12 hrs including a hour and a half on top and Mt. Muir. Be back when the snow melts in 2004 to test out the MR.

I first climbed this peak in 2000, and then climbed it for the second time in 2001. It was an inspirational time, seeing that we were just one month removed from the tragedy on Sept 11th. Someone had carried a huge American flag to the summit, which made the moment even better. I was with my girlfriend at the time who was so excited to summit Whitney. We sat down on the summit and enjoyed a snack together. When she opened up the peanut butter jar, inside was a diamond ring. The moment couldn't have been better to get engaged. She said YES !!!

Route Climbed: Whitney Trail Date Climbed: 20th October 2003  Sucess!

Hiked up with hyperbolictans and rgreene and friends. First major hike ever for me! Camped at the Portal and hiked up to Trail camp in ~6 hours. Felt OK but should have stoped and had lunch at Outpost Camp. Broke camp at 4 am and headed up the 99's. Great view on the backside of the massif, unfortunately drained my 3 litres before the summit. This made for a strong headache and a long walk down. Can't wait to do the mountaineers route in summer '04!

Weather was great that day.

View from the ridge/JMT trail of Whitney and its adjoining ridge reminds me of a high wave coming from the west just about to break onto shore

My first time on Whitney - this is really just a hike, but the weather was great, there was still a lot of snow and we went with friends I have not seen in a couple of years - perfect.

Much less snow that the year before - I was lugging snowshoes and have not used them at all! Otherwise great time, sunny on Nov 27, 2003 on the approach to Iceberg Lake. Cloudy and windy on Nov 28. The last part from the notch to the summit was more exposed than I thought - but not really technical. It was just me on the mountain - had a blast!

One day climb to the summit and back. This was my second attempt. It was great to finally reach the summit of a 14er, I have been turned around by weather on several others. Maybe I should quit going in the winter, Nah that's when all the fun is!

Route Climbed: Mount Whitney Trail Date Climbed: September, 1965

On my way from Salt Lake City to Berkeley to begin graduate work in Geography, I drove my 1948 Chrysler Windsor across Nevada and then southwest around the southern end of the Sierra Nevada. I slept in the car at Whitney Portal before starting up the trail long before dawn. I recall that there were many hikers on the trail including a woman in her eighties that did the climb every year. The way up seemed endless and I was glad to reach the crowded summit in order to take pictures and get back to the car before dark. After having climbed numerous mountains including the Matterhorn, Grand Teton, Popocatepetl, Orizaba, Mont Blanc, Mount Rainier and Huayna Potosi, I did easy Mount Whitney simply because it is the highest point in the conterminous US. Oh hum!

Route Climbed: Mt. Whitney Trail up from Miter Basin Date Climbed: August 24, 2003  Sucess!

We (Arnie, Veronica, Chip and I) made a three day odyssey from Cottonwood Lakes Trailhead through Miter Basin, over Crabtree Pass and up the southwest side of Discovery Pinnacle to the Mt. Whitney Trail and then to the summit (and then to the Portal). The sand slog up the southwest side of Discovery Pinnacle was enough to make you want to cry.
