With a group of three from Chantry Flats via the Gabrialino Trail to Sturtevant Falls and Camp Sturtevant, then Sturtevant Trail to Mt. Wilson, and down the Upper Winter Creek Trail to Chantry Flats. First Time.

spapagiannisA pleasant hike  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 20, 2014

This is a second training course for me when not on Baldy. This most recent summit was via the Chantry Flats "loop" (Upper/Lower Winter Creek), the first time was the out-and-back via Sierra Madre. Both routes are about the same, nearly 15 miles. I loved the Chantry Flats route especially with an ascent through a dense morning cloud cover! The overall shade is very pleasant as well, which is why I like using Mt. Wilson for endurance training without the exposure and heat being so taxing all the time. Hitting the summit on the weekend is interesting, observing the juxtaposition between the hikers and those who drove to the top for lunch and sightseeing.

Climbed with Sierra Club's WTC in 2012 as a 14 mile conditioning hike. Great fun, and a nice day hike!

Drove the road from Red Box to summit area after checking off Occidental Peak. Dropped down on Mt. Wilson Toll Rd to Harvard, then reversed course. Hike back up at high noon was hot. Views of LA were good despite some haze.

Date Climbed: Jun 17, 2012

15 miles round trip with nearly 5,000 elevation gain. 8 hours of fun. Trail has definitely some loving volunteers keeping it up. Got very hot on the way out as there is no shade toward to bottom. Great first peak in my new home of LA.

Mount Wilson was one of my favorite training grounds when I lived in LA. Up Chantry Flat/Sturtevant/Manzanita Ridge is the most popular route and probably my favorite due to great views and a great overall trail.

The Toll Road up Eaton is fun but looooong.

The Mount Wilson trail from Sierra Madre is long and has the maximum elevation and incline of any of the trails. It's an awesome training route but has some bees and other obstacles to watch out for.

The Wilson Trail from Chantry/Gabrileno and up the east side of Wilson is a whole bunch of fun. I did that in crampons in February of 2011 and it was a blast and is hardly traveled.

Point being, Wilson is a great mountain with tons of routes. Give it a shot. I've got some pics and gps logs on my blog site summitascents.com. If you have any questions about any of the routes, I'm always happy to help.

Dropped back down to road after bagging Disappointment and San Gabriel, then walked the blacktop to the top of Wilson for third peak of the day. Rescued two girls who had come up from Chantry Flat without realizing how far it was.

Left from the Mt. Wilson trailhead in Sierra Madre. Was definitely harder than I was expecting...I think partially due to the heat. I ended up hitting Mount Harvard, Hastings Peak, and Jones Peak on the way back. Kicked my butt as I wasn't prepared for the amount of vertical or time I would be out there. Pretty sweet though.
