Overview
Kackar is the highest and the very known peak of the Kackars. Kackar mountains also known as “Pontic Alps” form the northernsection of the Anatolian mountain chain.(located in North-East part of Turkey near the Black Sea) There are many peaks rising from the 3000m plateaus. The region is very popular for both Turkish mountaineers and the Europeans. Trekkings, alpine, rock and ice climbing are possible in this region.
Easiest route is a walk-up with scrambles. This range is an important glacial region. There are many falling rocks. Kackars are usually rainy or cloudy so be ready for an unexpected shower anytime!
Getting There
The nearest major airport is in Trabzon and Erzurum. You can easily get there via Istanbul or Ankara. For summit attempt from North_Route: You should go to Pazar from Trabzon. Then take a bus for Ayder Yayla and Yukari Kavron. Climbers should walk up to the Okuzyatagi(Camp Site) from Yukari Kavron…For Summit attempt from South_Route: You must go to Yusufeli/Artvin from Trabzon. Then go to Yaylalar Village, Olgunlar Yaylasi and Dilberduzu camp site (Yayla means “mountain pasture” in Turkish).
Red Tape
No permission or something else is required. Kackars is a national park so a fee can be charged in Ayder Yayla. However, they usually do not ask for a fee.
When To Climb
June, July and august is the best months to climb Kackar. It is even impossible to get to the camp sites in the hard winter conditions. Kackar mountains block moisture from Black Sea, south slopes are much dryer but northern slopes of these mountains are usually covered with fog. Northern valleys has also rain forests. Region has a sub-tropical climate.
Camping
There are many camping sites and they don't require any permissions. There are two main camp sites.
1-OKUZYATAGI: (Ayder Section) For climbers who intend to climb from North-route. From “ Yukari Kavron” mountain pastures it may take up to 3-4 hours to get by trekking.
2-DILBERDUZU: (Yusufeli Section) For climbers who intend to climb from South-route. From “Olgunlar” mountain pastures it may take up to 4 hours to get by trekking.
