OverviewWhen you are in the city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the district of Oberbayern (Bavaria) and have a look to the mountains above, the most impressive mountain is the Alpspitze (2629m). The Alpspitze is connected with the more famous Zugspitze (2963 meters, highest point of germany, meteorological station) through the Jubiläumsgrat.
The Alpspitze is part of the Wettersteingroup, built of limestone. Because these mountains are not far away from Munich, most important city in the south of Gemany, it is very popular for climbers and hikers of this region.
Often climbed in summer and easy to reach via the normal route, the Alpspitze is one of the classical skimountains of Bavaria in winter.
But becareful: with skis, the Alpspitze is often underestimated (avalanches, technical difficulties), maybe because of the proximity of the cable car, which leads the alpinists to the Osterfelderkopf (www.zugspitze.de).
From the Osterfelderkopf you can get in about two hours via the northface to the summit of the Alpspitze (in summer rocky terrain). You have two main opinions in the northface:
1. Nordwand-Ferrata: this route is fixed with ladders and steel cables.
2. Nordwandsteig: this route is fixed only on difficult parts.
The third opinion or an option for the descent is the route via the Schöngänge and the eastridge (also from the Osterfelderkopf, about four hours for the ascent). This route is often used in winter though its is not the standard ascent in winter.
In winter the easiest and most frequented route is from Stuiben (resp. Bernadein) via the East ridge (or directly up the Oberkar, depending on the snow).
Alpspitze in winter can only be recommended at avalanche danger level I (avalanche accident on 4th of Jan. 2002). The descent to Oberkar has an inclination of 40-45°.
Getting ThereVia the highway (Autobahn München-Garmisch) or by train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Both lasts about one hour.
From there starts the cable car to the Osterfelderkopf.
Red TapeNo permits or fees required.
When To ClimbThe whole year. Mostly in summer (june-september) and from march until may with skies.
