Overview
The first climb of the Olperer was about 1879 by Paul Grohmann, Jakob Samer and Jakob Huber via SE-Ridge. Many people climb this mountain. You can go in winter and in summer. Most people go in summer. From the summit you have an excellent view to the Hochfeiler, Hochferner, Grossen Möseler, etc.
The easiest route is the N-Ridge. Difficulty is II- UIAA. You start from the Geraer Hut (2324m). There are some big bolts in this route but you need also some mountain experience. From the Hut you need about 3,5 to 4 hours. You go to the Wildlahnerscharte. If you get to the Wildlahnerscharte from the Geraer hut, crossing the Olpererferner glacier, you have to turn right and climb in southern direction over the north ridge. Go straight to the summit.
Another good way is the SE-Ridge called "Schneegupf -Grat". Difficulty II UIAA. The startingpoint is the Olpererhut (2389m). You need about 3 hours from this Hut. Fromm the Hut you go NW to the Grossen Riepenkees. This Kees must be on your right hand side. Go up over some small rocks to the ridge. When you on the ridge, folow them to the summit.
There are many other routes with different difficulties. These both are the most popular routes.
Getting There
To both Huts you come via Mayrhofen to the Schlegeisspeicher. See also the page of the "Grosser Möseler". From the Schlegeisspeicher are marked trails to the Huts.
Another opportunity is the ascent to the Geraer Hut (and then to the Olperer) from the Gasthaus "Touristenrast" in the Valsertal Valley (10km from Steinach/Brenner). This Valley is a side valley of the Wipptal Valley leading to Italy.
Red Tape
10 € for the last kilometers of the road and about 6 € for 1 night at the Hut. The 6 € are only for members of an alpine club like DAV, ÖAV, SAC, etc. Non members must pay a little bit more. Parking is free at the Schlegeisspeicher.
When To Climb
You can climb the mountain the whole year. In winter and spring with ski. Both Huts have rooms for winter. They are normally open. Olperer Hut 16 places for sleeping in winter and the Geraer Hut with 10 places.
Camping
there are no camping restrictions but a Hut is more comfortable.
