OverviewThe Hinter Grauspitz, also known by its alternate name Schwarzhorn, is the second highest point in Liechtenstein, located on the border of that country and Switzerland. A cross stands on its summit, making it very easy to recognize from the surrounding area. There are no maintained trails to the Schwarzhorn, yet most routes are not technically difficult. Generally, more hikers summit the Schwarzhorn and do not continue to the Grauspitz because of the difficulty. The summit book in the side of the cross has many names in it. The simplest hike to the summit involves 750 meters of elevation gain over about 4 kilometers. One can take the Älpli Bahn from the town of Malans to a height of 1801 meters. From there, a nice hike will bring you to Ijes, a small dairy farm. Here, the maintained trail ends. After ascending steep grassy slopes and a thin ridge, you will be at the summit. On a clear day the entire country of Liechtenstein is visible from the summit, along with Austria to the east, and south down to the Piz
Bernina.

Getting ThereThe best way to climb the Schwarzhorn is to approach it from the Älpli Bahn. From freeway E35, about 10 kilometers south of Bad Ragaz, take exit 14, Landquart. Head east on the main road, following the sign that points to Malans. Soon you'll come to the small town. Follow the main street through town. Once again, there are signs pointing to the Älpli Bahn. Parking is free at the base of the gondola.
