Overview
Mt. Starr is located in the Rock creek region of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Rock Creek is a extremly beautiful area where the Little Lakes Valley, with its string of lakes, is surrounded by several 13 thousand foot peaks. Mt. Starr isn't one of the premier peaks in the region, but it is a worthy day hike that has outstanding views. Hike up the little lakes valley trail till it intersects with the mono pass trail. Take that to the top of mono pass then scramble up the peak to your right. The views from the top include the beautiful little lakes valley, Mt. Morgan, Mt. Dade, Mt. Abbot, Mt. Mills, Bear Creek Spire, To the North Pioneer Basin, Mt. Huntington, Mt. Hopkins, Mt. Crocker and much more!!
Getting There
From Scenic 395 turn into Toms Place/ Rock Creek Canyon about halfway between Mammoth Lakes and Bishop. Drive all the way up past Rock Creek Lake to the end of the road at Mosquito Flat Trail head parking lot.
Red Tape
To my knowledge nothing is needed for day hiking this peak. To do a backpack trip into the region you would need to contact the White Mountain Ranger station down in Bishop.
When To Climb
Mt. Starr is climable all year, but in the winter the road is closed and you would have to snowshoe or ski in or catch a ride on the snow cat that services Rock Creek Lodge. Summer is best.
Camping
The East Fork campground is a excellent place to car camp. There are other campgrounds in the canyon, check with the Inyo National Forest. Or you could backpack into the wilderness area and camp(permits required)
