Overview

Mount Cowen is the sole 11,000 foot peak in the Absaroka mountain range. It is often overlooked to the bigger peaks of the Beartooths, however, the few people who venture into its cirques and valleys find an endless supply of climbing routes and splendid beauty. Mount Cowen is the crown jewel of the Absarokas. First of all, its the tallest, but more importantly, it's visible from every direction. It dominates the skyline almost wherever it can be seen from. The mountain itself provides exquisite places to climb and great treks to be taken.

Getting There

Drive south of Livingston on US Highway 89, through Paradise Valley, for 20 miles. Turn left across the Yellowstone River and onto Mill Creek road. Follow Mill Creek road for 11 miles or so, then turn northeast Forest Road 3280 for 1.5 miles to the trailhead. The Snowy Range Ranch is nearby.

So you know the trail to the lake isn't easy. It gains 3500 feet in elevation in nine miles, just to the lake. Also there are no decent camp sites on the trail so plan on making it to the lake in one day.

When To Climb

Usually climbed July through early September. Don't worry about water there is plenty of it. In places it runs down the middle of the trail. Leather off trail hiking boots are recommended for staying moderately dry. They would also be nice to have for scrambling in the shale and boulders above Elbow Lake.

Winter climbs are attempted every year. Few of them are successful, but with the right avalanche awareness, and overall mountaineering experience, it isn't impossible by any means. Anybody with more information about winter attempts or summits please post some info.

Miscellaneous Info

You can find good information about Mount Cowen and Elbow Lake in the book, "Hiking Montana," it is by falcon guides. Try looking at www.falconguides.com

An even better option for the actual routes on the peak would be "Select Peaks of The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem." The book has a great descripition of the climb, and a wealth of information regarding its geological past. This book in particular is for people who want to climb the mountain. There is information on skiable couloirs and other massive glades.
Check this book out at www.selectpeaks.com.
