Overview
Pointy peak that looms 1200 meters above the small Norwegian town Tromsø. It is very accesible and thus recieves a lot of visits, mostly in summetime. Still, its a strenous walk that normally takes 3-4 hours from the trailhead.
1238 meters is not normally a high altitude, but Tromsdalstind lies at 70 degrees north. This means arctic climate, and very unpredictable weather even in summertime. Normally the view from the summit is obstructed by fog, rain or snow. But on a clear day it is tremendous. To the East and south Lies lots of sharp peaks and small glaciers. Most known is the Lyngen peninsula. To the north and west is there several islands in various sizes. Kvaløya, Ringvassøya and Reinøya are the biggest. The town of Tromsø looks very small from here.
Getting There
The main route is from the suburb "Tromsdalen" that can be reached by either bus or car (a cab will cost about 100-150 kroner from the town centre). Follow the dirt road directly against the peak. After about 3 kilometers there is a path to the left crossing the river. The first few hundred meters are steep, and a bit muddy men it is raining (which is pretty often..). Then just follow the prominent ridge at the left of the peak to the summit. The summit ridge is a little dangerous during spring/summertime because of huge cornices. If there is much snow, just keep to the right.
If there is snow lower down on the mountain, this route should be avoided entirely. There is a route for skiers following the southern ridge. Most people will choose to use the cablecar to about 400 meters on the hill "Fløya". From here three smaller peaks will be crossed before the long rise to the summit. The route is obvious in good weather, but should probably not be attempted if the visibility is low. Skiing season is from October to May.

When To Climb
Summer hiking is usually from July to September. Skiing is possible from November til April. The seasonal snowpack varies widely from year to year. Due to the midnight sun, the snow melts rapidly causing wet snow slides.
Camping
Camping is allowed, and possible near the river in upper Tromsdalen. Most people will still choose to stay at a hotel or youth hostel inside Tromsø.
