Overview

Gross Spannort is one of the most popular mountains around the small Alpine village of
Engelberg, in the very heart of Switzerland.
The mountain is easy recognisable from the valley below, with its two peaks
climbing into the sky. South of the Gross (big ) Spannort we find the Chli (little) Spannort
(3,140 m). Spannort is a mountain, which can be enjoyed from many different directions.
The normal route over the Spannort joch offers a nice variety of glacier and easy rock climbing (II) and have many
visitors on a nice summersday.

You reach Engelberg from the city of Luzern, either by car or train. Engelberg offers a great number
of hotels, camping facilities and restaurants etc.

Getting There

Normal route: Starting point is the Spannorthut (1,956 m). From the hut, go east towards
the saddle, Schlossberglücke, on 2,627 m. It is a rather good path and should take around
1,5 hrs. From the saddle, you start crossing the glacier Glatt Firn, which turns around the
Spannort. Be aware of the crevasses. On a late day in August it requires quite some zick-
zaking to find your way through the icefield.

When reaching the Spannortjoch, the saddle between Gross and Chli Spannort on 2,922m, after approximately 1 hrs, you leave the glacier and climb up the south ridge, which offers
easy and steady rock climbing (I-II) up to a small plateau from where the summit is easy accessible after another hour.
The view offers a beautiful sight of Engelberg below, the neighbourmountain Titlis, (the number one Engelberg attraction) the Sustenhorn to the north and the Bernes Alpes
in the horizon.

Other possibilities is the ascent from the east, using the Krönten hut as a starting point, situated in the Erstfelder valley.

Coming from the south, one can also use the Sustli hut for the Spannort climb, which is popular during winter for skiing.
The Sustli hut is located close to the Susten pass road.
