Overview

Anayet

The peaks of Anayet really two summits compose it: Vértice (Vertex) of Anayet (2559m) and Peak of Anayet (2545m). Both Anayet's twin peaks are some of the most emblematic summits of Canfranc's valley. Anayet's peak is the remains of a former volcano of it does 250 million years of which the chimney stays hardened for the lava was going out.

Valley of Canfranc: this valley also called Alto Valle del río Aragón (High valley of the river Aragon) is one of them more former inhabited of the Pyrenees. For this valley was meditating the most ancient way of communication between Spain (Hispania) and France (Galia) already from times of the Roman civilization.
In this valley is the ski station of Candanchú, one of the Spain's most former stations. Near of this point (1 km) is Somport, frontier position with France with a new tunnel of communication what allows to go on easily to the French slope of the Pyrenees to climb other mountains.
-Principal town: Jaca. Other villages: Canfranc, Villanua, Castiello de Jaca, Aisa.
-Principal mountains: Collarada (2886m) and all mountain of circo de Ip (Pala de Ip, Punta Escarra, Pala de Alcañiz,), Two peaks of Anayet, Aspe (2645m), Llena del Bozo (2566m), Llena de la Garganta (2599m), Lecherín (2565m), Bacún (2195m), La Leta (2125m), La Espata (2200m), Peña Oroel (1769m),...

Though the vertex is higher, the Peak has more interest to be more difficult and worthy. Generally the habitual thing is to climb both peaks in the same excursion.

First climb known: Henry Russel and Camy in 1874.

Getting There

Two principal routes for this peaks:
-Canal Roya: start point in parking near village of Canfranc.
-Valley of Tena: start point in Corral de mulas (parking near ski station of Formigal that is to few kilometres of Sallent de Gallego).

For know more about the approach to valley of Canfranc see the page of Collarada the highest mountain of the valley.

Red Tape

No permits required. In Peak of Anayet a step-crossing of degree 2 is equipped with a metallic rope ("sirga") that not always is in good conditions (It is possible to need rope in some occasions according to the experience of the companions with whom we go).

When To Climb

All year. In winter the step-crossing of the metallic rope is very dangerous and the Canal Roya has a lot of snow.

Camping

For housing in valley of Canfranc see the page of Collarada

Note about the news in the zone in 2004, 2005,...2009

The Government of Aragón and Aramón, company of ski resorts of the province (50% governement and 50% the bank IberCaja), they initiated in May of 2004 a great work in the nearby zone to Corral de las Mulas (point of beggining of normal route of Anayet) and the Portalet, in the valley of Espelunziecha. The work is a great parking for 2000 cars for the skiers and has supposed a great polemics among the neighbors of the nearby villages, the government, the organizations ecologists and all the lovers of the mountains and the nature. In the last months it have appeared several cracks in the zone and it's afraid that can be altered of form dramatics the ecological equilibrium of the zone but it seems that the economic interests have predominated in the decision.
Many mountaineers of Spain had said not to this work. (concentrations in march 2004, october 2004 and march 2005)
