Overview
One of the best day hikes in the Uintas. Challenging scrambling with exposure to a peak with spectacular views. Moderate popularity, most commonly climbed from the south ridge via the Mirror Lake highway.
Getting There
Take state highway 150 up to Mirror Lake (going thru either Kamas from the south, or Evanston from the north). Just north of Mirror Lake is the Highline Trailhead (and Hayden Pass). There is really no trail to Hayden, but the route starts here.
Red Tape
There is a fee to drive/hike in this area. I believe the one day cost was $3. For longer stays the price goes up. A season pass is available.
When To Climb
Best climbed from late June thru September. Due to the rugged nature of this peak, winter ascents are rare.
Camping
Due to the rocky nature of the peak, camping on the mountain would be difficult. Good camping is available near the trailhead where the terrain is much better. The Uinta Mountains are full of camping and backpacking opportunities. The Wasatch-Cache National Forest website (http://www.fs.fed.us/wcnf/) offers additional information.
