Overview

The Bubbles are a pair of peaks that stand side by side with only a narrow saddle separating one from the other. Their summits are rocky, largely bare, and they stand in great relief above Jordan Pond. The views from the summits are some of the finest in Acadia, and while they are not the highest peaks in the vicinity, they are still impressive and offer great vantage points of the area around Jordan Pond and views toward the Atlantic. One of my favorite spots in Acadia National Park. The view of The Bubbles from various points in the park are also quite notable, as they have a distinctive outline and shape that has given them their unusual name.

Getting There

To get to Acadia National Park, take I-95 North to Augusta Maine. From Augusta take Route 3 to Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island and into the park.

From the Bubble Rock Parking Lot take the Bubble Rock Trail. One mile to the twin summits. It's a moderate hike and no problem for anyone in fairly good physical condition.

Red Tape

Entrance fee to the park is $20 per car, good for seven days.

Climbing is allowed in several parts of the park (most notably Otter Cliffs). There are some restrictions on fixed climbing in some areas, due to vegetation restoration. Inquire at one of the visitors centers in the park.

When To Climb

All year. It's an easy, if strenuous hike in the warmer months. There is a lot of exposed rock on the route, and I would assume crampons would be a good idea when the conditions are icy. The park does discourage hiking in icy conditions, but does not prohibit it.

The Bubble Rock Trail is about one mile and takes you to both summits.

Camping

There is no overnight camping in any backcountry of Acadia National Park. The park is relatively small and fragile, so the only camping allowed is at two established sites (Seawall and Blackwoods), where the fees are $20 per site, per night.
