Overview

Ice Lakes Basin, a scenic high alpine wonderland, is home to several high, rugged thirteeners, including Vermillion Peak, Fuller Peak, Golden Horn, Pilot Knob and US Grant Peak. Each of these peaks reaching an elevation over 13,700 feet. Many People choose to do this trip as a backpack and camp in Ice Lakes Basin. This way being able to climb all the surrounding peaks. By its' easiest route, Grant does require some lover fifth class climbing (see photo below) and copious amounts of loose San Juan rock. The climb of this peak is remarkablely fun, but come prepared.

Getting There

The best way to get to US Grant Peak, is from Silverton, Colorado. Follow Highway 550 North towards Ouray for about 2 miles until you see the turnoff for the South Mineral Campground. Take this turn(left) and follow the good quality dirt road for another 4 miles until you arrive at the South Mineral Campground. There is parking on the right side of the road and this is the trailhead and the start of the approach to Ice Lakes Basin. 4x4 vehicles can shorten the approach by making a right off of the South Mineral Road towards Clear Lake and park at the first switchback. From here you will intersect with the Ice Lakes Basin Trail a little higher up. This will save some mileage and elevation. Follow the Ice Lakes Basin Trail into the lower basin where you will break off of the trail and climb northwest into the Island Lake Basin. From Island Lake Basin climb to the saddle between US Grant and Pt 13,520. This is where the southwest ridge route begins.

Red Tape

No permits required now, but check with the San Juan National Forest (970-247-4874 or www.fs.fed.us/r2/sanjuan) for more information. There is ample parking at the campground. The 4x4 parking is limited. Get an early start.

When To Climb

Summer months are best. Ice Lakes Basin holds snow late into the year and sometimes year round. So be prepared. However if you are looking for some snow climbing or backcountry skiing, Ice Lakes Basin is a great place.

Camping & Other Lodging

There are many good campsites along the South Mineral Road and good backpacking destinations along the approach.

Silverton also has a variety of hotels, motels, and inns that would all serve well as a starting place for your climb. Check out www.silvertoncolorado.com for more detailing information on availability and rates.
