Koziakas

Overview

Asklipios, one of the greatest doctors of the ancient times lived in Koziakas. He was using herbs from Koziaka to make up medicines. Koziakas is long ridge with direction from North to South, that rise from Kalampaka (Meteora) until Pili village and is about 25 Km long. To climb Koziakas mountain is not hard, because is a trekking peak. There is a refuge at the area named Mpakola (1738m) but is still under construction. Chatzipetros (Xatzipetros) with 1901m is the highest peak of the mountain Koziakas. The most popular route to Chatzipetros is from Pertouli's Ski Center, at the area named Livadia. A well signed path, with red spot, goes directly ahead to the slope. Less than 2 hours are required in order to reach the refuge, from where in 30 minutes can summit the highest peak, Chatzipetros.

Getting There

Trikala is the main city that is closed to mountain Koziakas. Trikala is 330Km far from Athens and 220Km far from Thessaloniki and is located in the central Greece. Ski Center of Pertouli is 38 Km from the Trikala city. Two buses per day are passing from the ski center. .

Red Tape

No permits are required to climb mountain Koziakas. You can camp everywhere on the mountain. In ski center of Pertouli there is Parking where you can park the car. In the mountain Koziakas life brown bear, but never an accident had happen until now in the area. Also, you can see deer and foxes.

When To Climb

You can climb mountain Koziakas every month of the year. The best period is in spring at the months April to June because everything has green color and there is a lot kind of follower. The only period the is not recommended to climb mountain Koziakas in the winter time and after big snowfalls, when there are a lot of fresh snow.

Camping

In the area Mpakola there is plateau at 1738m where there is a refuge named Xenonas. The refuge is under construction. Near by the refuge in the plateau is recommended for camping and is without fees as in every area in the mountain. Drinkable water can found 100 meter from the refuge on the path to Chatzipetros peak
