OverviewI knew I had to climb this mountain the first time I saw it from Elk Lake. 400 feet shorter than it's neighbor, Battle Ax., Mount Beachie also offers great views of all the major Cascade volcanoes. There seems to be two summits to this mountain. The western summit is a bald slab of rock just off of trail # 3341. The easten summit is a rocky wall several hundred feet long x about 15 feet thick x about 30 feet tall with a 50 foot gap in the middle. You'll find a rock pinnacle stacked on top of the wall. I call this "the phone booth" because that's where I make my phone calls to the office. Rock climbers should find this Mountain interesting, if not challenging. It's a great place to explore nooks & crannies.
Getting ThereTake Hwy. 22 east or west to Detroit, Or. Take Hwy 46 up the breitenbush river for about 4.5 miles. Turn left on road #4696 for about a mile. Turn left on road #4697 for about 4.5 miles. Look for a light green post and continue left. After about 1.5, very bumpy, miles you'll come to Elk Lake. You might want to park your sedan back near the green post and walk in. Continue around the lake till you get to a large wood post. Take the right fork to the end or as far as you can and still park safely. Hike about .6 of a mile to Beachie Saddle. Beachie Saddle is the main trail hub to Five different directions. 1) Back to Elk Lake. 2) Trail #3340 to Battle Ax Mountain. 3) Trail #3349 to Jawbone Flats. 4) Trail #3341 to French Creek Ridge. 5) My favorite scramble to the eastern summit of Mount Beachie.
