Overview

The two summits of Hochkarfelderkopf are situated at the eastern edge of the Tennengebirge . Together with Hochbrett, Fritzerkogel, Edelweisskogel and Tagweide it confines the vast plateau of the Tennengebirge to the south and to the east.
Although quite a number of marked paths lead to the summit from almost all sides Hochkarfelderkopf is predominantly climbed during winter and spring. Beautiful slopes for skiing run to the south-east down to Lungoetz as well as to Abtenau via Laufener hut.
The snow-heights in winter are amazing and more than one time I have seen the six meter high snow measuring station completely covered by snow.
In summer the intensely karstified landscape of the Tennengebirge attracts with numerous large cave systems.

Getting There

The Hochkarfelderkopf is situated about 45km south of Salzburg City. Salzburg has an international airport and is connected to the transnational railway and motorway net.
The villages at the base of Hochkarfelderkopf (Abtenau, Annaberg-Lungötz,) can be reached by public busses.
An online train timetable can be found at: http://www.oebb.at/en/index.html

Red Tape

No permits are required, no entrance fees have to be paid.

When To Climb

Hochkarfelderkopf can be climbed all year round. In winter the best conditions usually are from December to Mid-April. In summer late June, September and October are best. In July and August the weather might be rather hot and unstable with severe thunderstorms in the Tennengebirge. Take care of vertical caves covered by dwarf-pines or snow. Now and then people (mostly skiers) disappear in those karstic areas and in some cases were discovered by speleologists decades later.
