OverviewAztec Peak is the highpoint of the Sierra Ancha Mountains. This relatively unknown mountain range is located in the Tonto National Forest. Aztec Peak is also located in the Sierra Ancha Wilderness Area. Although the Sierra Ancha Mountains are not very impressive, they do have some precipitous box canyons, towering vertical cliffs, and pine-covered mesas. Elevations range from 4,000' near Cherry Creek to 7,748' atop Aztec Peak. A primitive road leads all the way to the summit of Aztec Peak, where a fire lookout is located. Aztec Peak is really just a rounded hill partially covered with trees, and it's not easily recognizable from a distance. There are many trails, roads, and campgrounds in the Sierra Ancha Mountains. With a prominence of 2,468', Aztec Peak is big enough to make an appearance on the Arizona Prominence Map.
Getting ThereFrom the small town of Roosevelt on AZ 88, drive about 14 miles southeast on AZ 88, then turn left onto AZ 288. Drive north about 15 miles or so until you reach Forest Road 487 on the right. AZ 288 turns to dirt after a few miles, but the road is good. Park here if you want to climb to the top. Otherwise, those with high clearance vehicles can drive to Workman Creek Falls about 3 miles up the road.
