Overview

Sherman Peak is the highest point of the Paradise Range in West Central Nevada. It commands its own segment of National Forest, and is an easy peak for the views. Almost no one climbs it, and it does not have a trail. It requires some easy and short, class 1-2, hiking through brushy terrain.

Getting There

From U.S. 50 or U.S. 95, take NV 361 to NV 844. This junction is about two miles north of Gabbs, NV. Turn east on 844, and head several miles to just past, and east, of a low pass. The good dirt road "107" leaves the paved highway, heading north. Drive north on this road 107, about 3 miles up to another road saddle and park. Hike cross-country east through dense forests of pinyon pines with lots of fallen tinder. You'll soon come to open slopes and reach the main north-south ridge. Turn right (south) and hike up to the obvious summit, which may be marked by a stick and cairn.

The climb runs about a 1,000 feet gain, over a mile or two one-way.

Red Tape

There are no permits, passes, or fees. This is Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest surrounded by BLM land.

When To Climb

This peak might be done all-season. Ocassionally a cold winter storm may dump snow at lower elevations. It seems this range does not normally get a lot of snow.

Camping

The climb is so short, no backpacking is necessary, or advised. There is no water on the peak, although patches of snow may lie somewhere after a cold storm, or a heavy snowfall, in winter.

The nearby Berlin-Ichthyosaur Nevada State Park has plenty of fee camping. Free but primitive camping may be done on nearby BLM land.

There's plenty of lodging in Fallon, and Reno, NV.

Mountain Conditions

The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and the BLM run the area. You might try contacting the nearby Berlin-Ichthyosaur Nevada State Park for any details about conditions. The closest towns are Fallon and Tonopah, NV (from the south).

"We have nothing against the practice slopes and the standard runs, but if that's all you know, you've missed something special; something lost beyond the ranges, a glistening new white world with its hard edges covered over for the winter, and you its discoverer."   --Dave Brower
